Just in time for Christmas
« on: December 24, 2019, 11:51:03 PM »
Several years ago, a good friend of mine tried shooting my Chambers Pennsylvania fowling piece with round ball.  His dominant eye is fubar so he shoots left eyed and from his left shoulder.  We were both surprised that he was able to hit most of the targets on the trail, with this his first experience with flint, no rear sight, and smooth bore to boot.  The fact is he was able to use the front sight alone and do very well.
So, the seed was sown, and we discussed building him a similar gun.  But he also wanted a rifle barrel with it...neat concept.  At that time, Barbie advised that they didn't offer a parts set that would take two different barrels, but patience paid off, and now they can.  So we ordered a 20 gauge smooth barrel and a .54 cal rifled barrel, and both fit the channel perfectly.  Naturally, I fit a rear sight on the rifle barrel, but I kept it low and as far forward as possible so he could see it...hopefully, it'll work out well.
The rifle barrel isn't much heavier than the smooth barrel, and it balances so well, the weight difference is almost un-noticeable.
I used this build to practice engraving, so practically everything got some engraving...thanks again Mr. Schippers.
So here's a few pics of this rifle/gun...hope you enjoy it as much as I did building it.  And thanks to the Chambers for such a successful parts set.

Beautiful! Would you be willing to share what you used as a final finish after staining?  It has a perfect satin-like sheen.

Thanks for the nice words guys.

The stock is stained with tannic acid, and Ferric nitrate, sanded between apps to reveal the curl, and in that process, the wood gets whiskered. The finish is multiple apps of Circa 1850 Tung Oil, which are allowed to cure two days between.  After seven of these, the wood is dressed back down to remove the build up, with a maroon ScotchBrite pad.  Then about three more very thin apps of oil go on the wood.  I let it cure for several weeks while I finished the metalwork, assembled the gun, and rubbed on one coat of MinWax floor wax.  I recommend applying wax several times a year...it protects both the wood and the metal.
The ramrod is stained with Fiebing's leather dye, and in this case, finished with tung oil, but usually, I just wax them.

Taylor, you have done some beautiful work on that twofer.  Really like the whole rifle/gun.

The rear sight installation is about the neatest I have seen - and I am going to try to copy you!

That is some fine work Taylor.  Beautiful gun in every aspect.  The execution of your borders, especially on the buttplate return is outstanding.  I don't think I would have to point that out to anyone here that does/tried engraving.  The symmetry of your parallel lines is incredible.

Stunning, simply stunning!  I believe that’s the most elegant Siler lock I’ve ever seen.  Engraving practice indeed!

Nice work as usual Taylor!   It is not often that you see the trigger plate with a nick & dot border.  I guess the nights are pretty long up where you are.   One of my students built a Fordney fowler w/ with a 20ga. smoothbore barrel and later we got a matching barrel 62 cal. rifled.  He has thumped several deer with it.  Changing the barrels only takes a few minutes.  I agree that it is a great concept.  I hope your friend has good success with it.  Best wishes...Ron

Everyone is going to have their favorite part on this one.  I keep going back to the detail of the rear sight and its very designed installation.  Nice work!

Thank you all for your support.
Tim, no offense taken indeed.  It's a perfect observation about the build;  its whole concept.  I built this gun with my great friend in mind, so every aspect of it had him in my mind.  I had no idea of the hours swimming past as I worked away on little details.  I took pictures along the way and sent them off to him at the end of every day, or part of a build.  His responses were always reassuring.  An example occurred right at the end of the build, when I case hardened the engraved screws, then burnished them in a soft wire wheel.  The result was a dramatic change in their colour and texture, from mirror polish to subdued black/grey.  When he saw the result, he commented that he didn't like the appearance of those huge screw heads on the side plate in Chambers' web site example, but really liked the look of them on his gun.
We spoke yesterday on the phone, and he plans to come north when the weather improves, to shoot it and take it home.  I will be test firing it first of course to make sure everything is working as it should, and to file down the rifle front sight to get it into the black.
I really enjoy shooting my own PA fowler with ball, and there's no reason this one should be less fun.  The stock has just the right drop and lop to make it most comfortable and accurate.  With my own gun, I have 'aced' several trails in competitive shooting, and my buddy Norm shoots his (also a lefty) like a rifle.  Great design.

Hello Taylor,

Beautiful rifle and a good choice, two barrels.
Your engraving looks great and it looks so clean!
The rifle is made for a left-hander and I am also a left-hander but........
I have been looking under my Christmas tree, I didn't find it!!
Do you recognize this engraving on the picture?

Adrie

Adrie:  yes, I do.  That's a patchbox I engraved for Hans in 2010, a copy of one by Lechler.

Smylee:  there are elements in this style of engraving that can be found on firearms from around the world including England and America.  But it is not typical of American work of the period we are trying to emulate.  The style is rococo and features tendrils, vines, and leaves.  It reminds me more of the best relief carving found on longrifles than their engraving.  The borders though, are frequently used on period guns, again, both European and American.  But American guns rarely incorporate the detail and delicacy of this style of engraving.  So this is definitely contemporary interpretation.  I don't think it takes away from the beauty or elegance of a gun.
Schippers illustrates, in his book, a swivel gun that is simply loaded with very fine engraving.  One of my personal goals is to build such a rifle, and to this end, I have assembled the parts to build one.  Until I bought the book, my idea was to simply emulate the work of Wm. Antes, using his wonderful old rifle as my inspiration.  But now, I'm leaning heavily toward the rifle Mr. Schippers presents.  I hope I live long enough to give it a go.
