This is not a locked box but a cam spring type lid closure if I am not mistaken. Just hook your thumb nail under the lid . and lift. I have a western PA rifle with a roller on the cam portion  that's riveted to the patchbox lid.

I did one with a cam spring or "friction spring" setup.  I had posted the rifle build a couple years back but the photos are now missing.  Here are a few pics that may help:

Great!   Those are excellent pictures I can follow.

Based on the photos I had, It was not clear to if the original used a small catch like some of the Southern rifles.

It also appears that the fixed piece nearest the butplate could benefit from being made of thicker stock to be sure the thumbnail dent was deep enough to be useful.

 Thank you all.

Curtis, Great stuff man. I am copying that to my tutorail folder collection.  Nicely done.  Are both pieces of steel the same thickness or is the cam piece on the lid slightly thicker than the spring portion?

Thanks Dave.  I'm pretty sure I used the same stock for both pieces.  It was some springy scrap I had in the shop so I'm not sure what the material was.  You could use spring stock.
