I feel inadequate ( but I’ll post a pic or 2 anyway!)
« on: December 31, 2019, 06:33:24 AM »
I see all these really nice rifles and I feel inadequate, (but that’s never bothered me before, and it’s not bothering me now.) Thought I’d post a pic of my current project.  I horse traded for a couple of barrels  A year or so ago and promptly traded one off.  I kept a 40 cal. Made by J.T. McCartney  in 1982, thinking I’d  make a 1/2 stock for our club matches someday.  Decided to get out of my flintlock comfort zone and do just that, and a back action to boot.  (Last gun I made with a back action was in the 1970’s).   At any rate I have it pretty much assembled at this stage, and have fixed the bigger mistakes so far.  ( note the patch on top of stock ahead of the snail.).   All work , with the exception of drilling the lock bolt hole and the 2 tang screws , was done with hand tools. That includes sawing out the stock and drilling the ramrod hole.   At 70, I dont work as fast, or as well as I used to, but it’s still just as much fun.

Sorta looks like what you would expect from the Hawken shop for local trade.

That’s sort of what I had in mind.  Not any particular style, just a late percussion gun for club matches.  Next are the cheek piece inlays, and making a cap box.

I like the rifle.  The back action lock is unusual but it doesn't take away from this rifle.  You will enjoy finishing this one up, and  it'll be a grand shooter.  thanks for posting...I like the rifle.

My first thought was Tryon of Phild. When I noted the BA lock. I too think it a good looking gun and should be a good shooter if a good load is worked up.

Nothing wrong that I can see and the back action lock is not common on
the guns made today.

Good locking rifle.I made 2 back action lock locks years ago and never made a rifle to put one of then on. If the good lord is willing ,I might make one. I am 84 years old.

Does anyone make a quality back action lock now? I have only owned one gun
with a pair of them but it was a H&H breech loafer with exquisite Brazier locks.

You're on the right path. Here's a couple of photos of my ancestors' .40 caliber he brought from Missouri to Oregon in 1845. He was on he "lost" wagon train guided by Steven Meek.

Joe Meek's "Old Sally" had a back action lock. If I am properly informed.
Nicely done rifle and should serve you well.

Thanks for all the replies and compliments.......I must say that the title of the post was intended tongue in cheek.  I really don’t feel inadequate ( well,  just a couple of days a week....the ones that end in “y”.)
At any rate I will post some finished pics when it’s got all it’s  German silver inlays, and a nice dark coat of stain.
Good shooting, and hope for some snowless match days in the next few months.

I’d do it up with Jim Kibler’s tannic acid wash followed with either Aquafortis, or vinegaroon, rubbed back with fine Scotchbrite, either one will make the curl literally jump out at you.

I have the photo of Joe Meeks' rifle in one of my books, maybe Hanson's. As I recall it was pretty ugly. But then, she must have been a worker or he wouldn't have kept her.

The rifle in the OP appears to be better designed than my original. The balance point of mine is just in front of the nose cap which means the ramrod digs into my hand and it would be pretty cold on the fingers in cold weather. I built a .32 caliber replica and corrected that problem.

Turned out sort of “Hawkenish” after all.  All it needs to finish is a rear sight.  Feeling adequate again....for a while.
