New Style of Stitching (for me anyway)
« on: January 04, 2020, 05:32:25 PM »
I saw an old bag online, ebay, that had an interesting style of stitching on the side seam so I wanted to try it. Im using Barktanned deer skin and waxed hemp thread.  It gives a good look.  I am a little worried about how much of the thread is exposed but it seems to be working so far.

Is that also called a blanket stitch?

I knew an expert would know.  And looking at my Whitney Blanket laying here it seems pretty obvious now.

Thanks T.C.

The main problem with that stitch used with a pouch or ball bag, etc. is a rub break to the stitching and it'll unzip, it seems to me.

As TC says, Blanket stitch, And as Bob M says, prone to wear through, as stitch isn't protected .

OK on blankets though!

Yes, it's the blanket stitch and also the buttonhole stitch. Pretty easy to master, but I wouldn't want it to be used as the seem that will get a lot of use. The principal use as it was intended is to put a check on edge fraying.

I use it on the edge of a flap that's lined with fabric sometimes to bind the fabric edge. Not a lot of pressure there and a repair looks great with another thread.
