Tinned Powder Measure
« on: December 28, 2019, 08:58:21 AM »
Ok, so I couldn't find the thread I was remembering. So here is a tinned steel measure I just finished up. It was inspired by one I saw for sale on Ebay that was supposedly dug at Ft. Ticonderoga. Making it a Revolutionary War era style. I couldn't help but try my hand at making one similar for a trade rifle I am slowly building. I welcome your feedback, and thoughts on it. It holds roughly 90grs of 3f. Am planning to keep perfecting my design, and make more of these in different sizes.

Nice work!  I've never actually seen an original, though.  Is the hexagonal cross-section typical?

Thanks for posting!

All the ones, I have seen were round. However, when I saw the hexagonal one. I had to try my hand at it. An old collector shared some insight into them. Some of his favorite pieces were tinned, then had a wooden plug fit to the base. Will track down some information if I can and share.

Very neat. My only suggestion would be to make sure the measure is comparable in diameter to the gun bore size, thereby easing pouring the charge in the bore. God bless, Marc

Is for my 50 and up, so not a problem there. If I cut an angle into it with a corner forming a vee.  It would pour easily into just about any caliber one wanted.

Looking good !
I am inspired by your work here and must try my hand at something along these lines for a winter nights project.

Looking forward to seeing the finished design.
