Bag #21 - Join or Die
« on: January 15, 2020, 01:04:12 AM »
Hi Folks,

I just finished this one up.  Bridle leather cowhide straightforward inside-out bag.  Cowhide stiffener/pocket inside the top back.  The flap is tooled with the cartoon attributed to Benjamin Franklin referencing the "disunited state" of the Colonies.  The top of the flap is tooling leather, backed by bridle leather.  The stiffener idea combined with a pocket just occurred to me, but I am sure others have used it long ago.  Nothing new under the sun.  God Bless,   Marc

Marc, that flap tooling is amazing!  I like your pocket idea, too. Another great bag!

 Really beautiful bag!
I'm new to this forum. I spend most of my time making knives and accoutrements for sale in your sale forum. Not sure if this is the place to show them? Not to sell, just for showing. Any ideas on that before I post a photo? Thank you very much for your help, and keep after the leather work, you're very good at it.

Sure you can sow them here. Then if you want to sell them post them in the "Classified".

Really well done Bud, the stitching looks Great. I really like the reinforcement setup for the straps and combining it with a pocket is good thinking. Could become a signature mark.

Hi folks,  Many thanks for the kind words.

Mike Lyons, the tooling was done three times before I was happy, so I think I was more persistent than brave.  :-)

God bless, Marc

It’s very nice tooling and consistent.  You definitely have it figured out.  I struggled with keeping the leather at the proper moisture content.  As soon as I would get it there,  it would dry some and leave a different looking tooling mark.  The worse part was that you have one crack at it. Once you have an error,  it’s start over time.   I still haven’t figured out the trick to keeping the moisture consistent throughout an entire project.  You and James gave me some good advice but it boils down to experience and knowing leather more than I do.  When James told me it required a feel,  I knew I was in trouble.   ;D

Neat little bag Marc and and interesting method of pocket and strap attachment.

Mike Lyons,
The "feel" is the cool moisture content. Here are some casing instructions from a couple of guys I respect in their field of leather tooling (authorship noted in the images)
