Lock for New England Fowler
« on: January 16, 2020, 09:29:17 PM »
I would like to build a New England (inspired) fowler.  I have the flintlock fowlers book and have been studying it.
Tod do this project , I would like to repurpose some parts.  One of the parts is a RE Davis Trade gun lock.
Its about 6 inches long x 1 inch.  It is round faced and has a fairly straight bottom edge.  It seemed like a lot of the New England fowlers had curved bottom locks though maybe not quite banana shaped.  Would this lock I have be way out of place on a New England styled fowler?
Thanks

It depends on the timeframe of the gun you want to build. Yes it’s big but it’s of 1790 and later styling. A lot depends on how much the details matter to you.

Any round faced English export lock with significant “banana” shape would be more mid 1700s.
