A flat bison horn?

I have a real nice bison horn that I was thinking about flattening. I have worked on several bison horns and am aware that they are a little different from cow horns. I really don't want to experiment with this horn and was a wondering if anyone has flattened one and what are the concerns. Any advice would be appreciated.  Thanks....... John  Zureki

My thoughts on this are that a bison horn has an awful lot of taper, and will be Real wide in the butt-end if flattened. May be hard to hold on to in use.

Have heard they split easier than cow horn, but I have only rounded them, not flattened ..

If your horn is from a young animal it MIGHT be thin enough to flatten.  Most bison horns I have seen are so thick that I cannot feature flattening them.

Wish I could tell you how it was  done. But I really don't know what would be involved. But as Taylor says some of these horns are thick. On  the small end for sure......LP

Louis:  the applied tip on your horn diminishes the effect of the exaggerated flare.  That's a classy piece of work.

I agree with every one here so far. That is a fine looking horn for sure. I can,t remember where right now but I think I seen one almost like it in a museum some where. Maybe Glorieta or Cody.

Thanks for the insight folks. The horn that was posted really looks great. I am going to have to sit on this idea for a while. I really would hate to experiment with this horn; they are to come by around here. Thanks again,   JZ

You can flatten Buff horn. Be aware of the flaws in the horn just like cow horn. I work it down to where I want the thickness before I flatten it. I Use hot lard at around 335degrees. I do it in multiple heats for better control.

My problem with flattening a bison horn was getting the hole drilled for the spout...

The drill bit worked it’s way thru the side of the horn...

I used a heat gun too flatten my horn, but I’m sure hot oil/lard would be easier.
