Joe Schell 40 cal

Joe made me another iron mounted rifle in the woodsrunner pattern. Started out with a hard heavy slab sawn piece of sugar maple from Brian Huffman. The barrel is a Bob Hoyt 40 cal b weight thats 39 an half inches long. The lock is a Chambers early ketland. Joe hand forged all the hardware. The front sight is a 1962 silver quarter my birth yr and the thumbpiece is a 1936 silver quarter which is my mothers birth yr. The diamond on the trigger guard is small pirce of the quarter left over from the front sight. The stock is Nitric acid an a beeswax finish. The metal is nitric acid an allowed to rust on its own then boiling water blued. Joe done a great job thinning this little rifle down. It balances really good an points even better.

Absolute beautiful rifle. I have one in the works with Joe. After seeing yours I am glad he is building it.

No sir. Its his standard rifling an 1 in 48 twist if I remember correct

Nice rifle Allen. One day I want Joe to build me a Woodsrunner in a big bore rifle. I think it would be comfortable to shoot. Nice forge work. Tim

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. I have put a few rounds thru the gun just enough to tell its gonna do pretty good. The sights were perfect for windage without touching them and the front needs to come down quite a bit when I see what the tightest load combo will be. Lock is very fast an sparks like my uncles old Lincoln 225 stick welder. I think the lock is gonna be pretty easy on flints as the flint is still good an sharp after 15 rounds.

Tim I dont think you could go wrong with this pattern. My 62 Woodrunner Joe built me is very comfortable to shoot. I would recommend this pattern for anyone planning to build a large bore gun

Brian this is the second time you have done me right with your stock blanks. Joe said both blanks you sold me for both my woodsrunner rifles were pleasure's to work an carve

Can you describe this "woodsrunner" pattern?   It's lovely, just curious if it's a copy of a specific school or from a specific builder or just what Joe may have come up with.

The "Woodsrunner " rifle is an early original rifle. Just do a search and you will find lots of info. I believe Jim Parker "Bama" has an extensive library of pictures made when he had access to the rifle. Tim
