Friends, I just finished stitching this one up yesterday, ready for dye and finishing. It’s my take on one of the patterns in T.C.’s book, with a few changes. The back panel is 3-4 oz. cowhide, remainder of the bag itself is 3-4 oz. calfskin. The straps are a little heavier cowhide, 5-6 oz. Theres an inside pocket, a gusset in the bottom, and all the seams are welted. I found an antique pinking punch on eBay, and finally used it on this project.  Don’t know what color it’ll be, but I want to try something other than brown or black.

Just put a light coat of oil on it, and lay it on the dash for a few weeks, flipping it occasionally. The sun will make it a nice tan color.

Coming along nicely! If you want to dye your thread a certain color,  you might try it off the bag before stitching.

My first thought was black iron due the but since you've nixed that color then go for cordovan or oxblood.

Thanks for all the kind words and suggestions. I made some wallets out of this same calfskin for Christmas presents, and dyed them different colors. One of my favorites was saddle tan, so I’m definitely leaning in that direction. The dark brown thread should still show a nice contrast with it...guess we’ll see when the new quart of dye gets here.

Nice, clean, crisp work! I know those bound edges on the flap can be a pain but you did it quite nicely.  You've got some hours in that bag for sure.
