Touch Hole Safety / Integrity
« on: January 29, 2020, 12:42:30 PM »
I've got some concern about this touch hole placement on a factory barrel pistol its a .54 cal,15/16 barrel.
My question is it in the wrong place, will it be a concern of maybe a blowout, because it is not positioned right on the flat of the barrel and some of the liner thread are exposed.
This is a factory pistol kit, and I have done kits in the past and can't remember the touch hole being located off the flat of the barrel.
Or am I just over worrying about nothing, because I'am a greenhorn on this subject?

It suffices to say your instincts are correct on this one probably more wrong here than just the touch hole liner.   Send it back if you can.

The whole thing, not just the barrel.  Looks like the lock mortice is off and is probably the reason for the misplaced vent liner.

To answer your question:  you have a barrel wall of about .198".  I think that the vent liner is safe.  The pressure in a pistol barrel, especially of that calibre, is quite low, and the liner is unlikely to blow out.  I'd suggest a maximum charge with a PRB of about 30 gr. FFFg.
I see that it is a slotted liner.  If you remove and re-install the liner every time you shoot it, all bets are off.  Doing so will wear the threads which are minimal already.

I’m often of the minority opinion. A touch hole liner’s safety is determined by the threads engaged with the barrel threads and that is independent of placement EXCEPT if, as in this case, the number of threads engaged at the lower edge might be insufficient. Needs inspection.

Can’t tell if a properly placed touchhole liner is safe without knowing about the threads.

I was posting same time as Taylor. I’m not all alone!  ;D

Here is the threads, the first looks like they drilled into the bottom wall,

Enough threads to be safe. If your still worried proof test the barrel with a double charge of powder and a tight fitted ball.    Al

In addition to the low touch hole placement, it looks like the touch hole is placed too close to the front of the pan. There is another thread on here about a touch hole close to the front on the pan. This had to do with the flash from the pan being directed back to the shooters face.
I think there are multiple problems with this kit. Send it back if possible.

I noticed that the touch hole is right at the front of the pan as well.  I'd have that in the mail on its way back right away.  Good luck.

My vote is safe but wrong.  Most nuts only have three threads to lock down a bolt or stud.  At pistol pressures it will be fine.  I wonder what they used to cut that big barrel channel gouge under the breech end.  Looks like the router slipped.

Entirely safe, looks like 6 threads to me and almost centred, but not quite. Even though the vent is low on that flat, it's high in relation to the pan.
Sure - send it back if possible.

Thanks for the inputs,I will be on the phone in the morning with them about sending it back .
I did this same kit about 10 years ago in a .50 cal and never had any problem with it. I think quality control has gone south.

There is no doubt that priming powder will go down the screwdriver slot and build up behind the lock. I guess you know what will come next! Not good!

I agree about the screwdriver slot. Surprised others didn't comment on it. No way would I accept the gun, send it back.

In addition to the other comments.... does the frizzen even cover the holes countersink when closed.
Enough thread engagement, but it is esthetically wrong and poor workmanship, and I would sent it back also.

If they replace the barrel the touch hole may be to high on the next barrel. What you have now matches up with the lock position  right ?   Al

Not to mention it acts like a little cutting torch, and will cut into the pan.

I just wanted to do an update on this, after sending this back
I did receive a Full Refund, because of the major problems with this kit.
Thanks for all the helpful inputs.
