Information wanted on this rifle
« on: February 01, 2020, 05:54:53 AM »
New to posting and just beginning to learn about longrifles.  I am considering purchasing this rifle and would like some information about it. What can y’all tell me about it?

Lehigh style, nicely fit and finished. Nice curl. Lock is maybe an L&R Germanic. Does not look like a Siler or Chambers lock. Looks greenish in the photos. Maybe it was stained with chromium trioxide or potassium permanganate or both.

Can’t tell from here. I’d take a wild guess and say it’s got a straight Douglas barrel. Good a chance as any. No markings?

Octagon barrel two wedding bands. May be maker on bottom. Maybe Colerain. Just guessing.

Obviously this stock got several coats of strong Chromium trioxide. This will be hard to overcome. I’ve not seen a maple stock of this quality turn this deep green. I also fear after stripping, and sanding the stock, the only treatment that is likely to work is tannic acid/aqua fortis that might attack the wire inlays.

I briefly owned a GRRW fullstock that was just as green.

It doesn’t look too bad actually. I’d French Grey the iron as opposed to the maroonish but not too bad.

It' photographed against a green background.  With a little gamma correction, you might see that it's not all that green.  On a red background it would probably look totally different.

You might want to shoot it before you buy. There are subtleties of Lehigh wrist architecture that make some guns unpleasant cheek slappers, while others are just fine. I cannot speculate from the photos how this one would be.

Here it is on a white background. These pictures look more brown but it is very much green. Thank you for all the replies. I will have the opportunity to shoot it soon, that’s great advice. I also wouldn’t have guessed that refinishing could harm the beautiful inlay work. No marking on the barrel at all.

Flinchrocket, are you referring to the gunsmith?

Refinishing per se will not harm the inlay work, as long as it is done correctly. The best finish is of course aqua fortis stain + a non-polyurethane oil varnish. You can make aqua fortis from iron nitrate crystals in alcohol, or if you use a nitric acid / water base aqua fortis, just neutralize it with baking soda or ammonia. Skip the tannic acid. It's a fad, and worse yet, it's water based.

Adding water to the stock could conceivably raise the grain enough to move the inlays. Maybe not. Or maybe they would be fine after the stock dried. Why find out?

So, KISS principal applies - I'd highly recommend alcohol / iron nitrate crystals. This will not raise the grain, gets ideal results and makes your life a lot easier.

The lock is a Doc Hadaway flintlock. Sorry for the confusion. Have no idea who made the gun.

John has one that green.  Glad he did it, such that I'd never make that mistake. He used potassium permanganate. And it's about as green as this one looks on the green background.
