Building progess of my .66 Flinter
« on: February 07, 2020, 02:29:13 AM »
I am building a .66 caliber flint lock rifle and just wanted to use this post as a repository of my progress. These are early pictures and I am still learning how to post pictures.

Hi Rich: These two post were mainly to see if I could actually post pictures with this different computer. So far so good.  The rifle will be some what styled after a Jim Chambers English Sporting rifle. I would have just bought one of his kits but I wanted a larger Cal. gun so Charlie Burton made this 16 bore for me. Hopefully more pics as I progress.  :)

Well, Grouch, you have made a good start -  a nice piece of hard maple and a good barrel!  I think most start out this way   LOL!

It is going to be interesting to follow along as you make a keepsake from a lump of wood and a lump of iron,

Thanks Craig, but actually its a very dense piece of American Walnut but the lighting was a little intense so it looks lighter. I wanted to use English Walnut but the future owner( after I get to use it on a few hunts) wanted this wood. Jim Chambers round face English lock and Jims castings for most of the rest of it.

It'll be an excellent hunting gun for what? Early on I found that building LRs was easier than taking pics and posting them. …...Fred

It should be a good rifle for all the bigger game that I would ever be able to afford to hunt. I have to hunt big game because I can,t see well enough to hunt small game anymore. ;D I know what your saying about pictures, this techno stuff is still a challenge for old school.

Here are 5 English flinters.
The top one is a 6 bore.

This one is by Smart Dog.

Thanks for those pics Daryl, I have the J.N. George book with those pics but your blown up versions show more detail. When I get to the point of RR pipes I see Twigg had three on his with a 30 or 31 inch barrel but my barrel is only 28 so will be curious as to what will look the best, 2 or 3.  Three might look crowded and two might look naked. I guess I still have time to think about it.

I like your project. I'm making a swap barrel .62 rifle/20ga smoothbore. I was thinking the  .62 rifle would be nice for the bear, moose, and elk up in Northern BC here, and the 20 ga for birds and clays.  Mine will be a half stock a lot like Smart Dog's.
I like this one as the basis for mine.

I think 2 pipes with an entry pipe is the 'proper' way to go with either full stock or 1/2 stock.
