sheet brass source for sideplate
« on: February 08, 2020, 06:11:38 PM »
Anyone have suggestions for a good source of 0.125" sheet brass that mimics  the composition of what was used on originals - for use as brass for a sideplate?  TOW sells this, any experience with that stuff?

Look for 260 Gunmetal brass or 260 Cartridge brass. Same stuff. A quick look has most metal suppliers selling it.

I have a bit of it. How much do you need?

Thanks guys - John, for right now only need enough for one plate, but maybe double in case I mess it up. For one plate it would be roughly 5" x 1"+.  If you have some extra you are willing to part with that would be great!

Dave, My stuff is 1.850" wide, but you should be able to shift things around to get two out of 5 inches.
PM me your mailing address and I'll get it on the way Monday.

You could use .090 thick brass if you wish to save some money. Just don't inlet it as deep.

If I remember correctly. I got .125" brass from McMaster-Carr.

I use old commercial push plates from the salvage yard, and brass kick plates from the same source. A half dozen push plates, and a kick plate or two, and you’ve got enough brass for a bunch of gun fittings.

Online metals.  I have been using them for years and am very pleased.  No order too small or too large.  Quick shipping.  They have just about everything I use except spring steel.

An important factor w/ buying .125 thick brass sheet  that's intended for multiple sideplates  is the sheet size. TOW changed the sheet size and a lot of the sheet is wasted because I only use .125 thick brass for sideplates . ….never used it for anything else.....Fred

The alloy used in originals runs from yellow to red brass. If it was heated for too long or melted from other castings it gets redder every time its remelted.
Alcobra Metals in Spokane can give you almost  any size you want. They get brass in large sheets and can cut almost anything you want. Also they often have cutoffs and scraps in the sales room or did.
C260  is the best choice its Cartridge Brass and is very ductile and yellow.

Jack Garner at Tennessee Valley Manufacturing sells both brass and steel sheet stock in many thicknesses.

McMaster-Carr

I just got 2 sheets of 12x12 of 0.040 and 0.032, and a 6x6 of  0.188 today. Easy to order. Select "260 ultra-formable brass". It's quality stuff and no lousy bronze mixed in.
