Split Horn Tip Repair
« on: February 17, 2020, 05:48:40 PM »
Had this horn with a slight split in the tip.  I had spread the tip and got thin glue down in it, but wanted a trouble free fix going forward.  Plus, with my OCD, the glued hairline split still held dirt so it was slightly noticeable and bothered me.  🙂

So I went through some of my centerfire brass rounds and found a 243 case that was the right size for this slender tip. I cut a piece out with tubing cutters, worked it down, and flared it a bit.  I cut a slight groove in the tip with a hacksaw and filed it down gradually to get a tight press on fit, and glued it to stay.  The first one of these I’ve done. Thought about trying to roll the edge, but didn’t want to push it, so just filed the edge down leaving it a few thousandths longer than the tip.  I’m thinking this should hold it for the next 100 years or so.

OK Rich here you go. I didn’t make this one or scrim it.  My significant other asked if she could try her hand at scrimming  something. I got this horn in a trade, so I gave it to her along with my tools and 10 minutes of instruction. This was her first scrim attempt.  I think she did pretty well, and another reason to fix the tip.  Of course now she’s off on number 2,....a plain rum horn I picked up along the way somewhere.

I love it Top Jaw. Talk about coming out of the blocks fast. That is some fantastic and bold engraving. Have her keep at it. Don’t let her look at too many others as she might change her style. I am glad you are supporting her efforts.  God bless, Marc

That scrim is very plausible. Super job.

Sweet horn all around. I like the tip fix, and wish the first horn I ever engraved looked half that good!  Great job, the both of you!

Good way to fix splits. If I make a spout with thin walls I put a brass wrap around it hoping it will prevent a split. Nice horn overall also.

Since some of you are tracking along with my rookie scrimmer, Here is her second try on a vertical rum horn.  I suggested a period eagle.  She found the image and took it from there.  It helps to be very artistic.

Her work looks like someone who had been doing it for many years.  Does she paint and/or draw too?

Wow to say that’s nice work is a nearly a insult! Amazing, Amazing, Amazing! Her art with some study, could rival any I have handled. And is already better than a lot I’ve handeled. Now you need to learn how to make horns worthy of her artwork. GBG!

That is some nice looking work and using the brass cartridge case for the repair turned out well.

One of my priming horns has just such a 'repair'. A piece of ctg. brass was what I used as well.
