New bag

Heres a bag I'm finishing up.  Still have to do the strap yet with buckle.  This is copied from one in Webb's books on appalachian bags.  It's probably my favorite in that book.  I made one before but without a welt.  This one has a welt and I increased the size slightly.  Also trying to get better with the aged look as I like that.

Nice looking bag!  There are plenty of examples of rustic bags in that book...a guy could stay busy for a long time working his way through it. One day I need to make one for my Gillespie squirrel rifle.

Thanks for the comments, gents.  I've struggled with trying to get the aged look but I'm happy with this one.  Just want to be good enough to make a few for friends and prizes.  Will never be at the level of Ewing, Scott, Fiorillo, Mills, etc.  This one will be going to my clubs (Lancaster Muzzleloading Rifle Association) fund raising raffle later this year.

Just keep in mind when these guns were being used, the horns and bags were essentially new sometimes. I sometimes scratch my head when I see someone in period clothes with a bag and horn made specifically to look 200 years old and extremely aged and weathered.

Smokey, I get it and agree with you.  My guess is that most bags were indeed "new" to the user and looked new.  I also guess that a few might have been crude as they scavenged whatever they could to make something that would satisfy the need at hand.  I like the look of used but not overdone as you see sometimes but that's just a preference.  Kind of like Jean's.  I usually will buy the faded Jean's as opposed to the new looking deep blue Jean's.  My wife and I had the same conversation the other day.  She asked me why I always try to make bags look old and then the Jean's came up.  Of course she opted for the new dark blue jeans.🙄🤷‍♂️

Being born and raised in southern Missouri, I can't believe I'm going to perpetuate the stereotype...

But for the authentic look... the typical pointed black felt hat (feather optional), corn cob pipe, bib overalls (with only one gallus buttoned) over faded red long johns, while barefoot... And toting a crock jug with three X's on it. Throw in a banjo and a chaw of twist tobacco.

Like I said fellas, born and raised (up through my teens) in SW MO... I know what you mean. Not nearly as many of the 'Popcorn Sutton' types there once were... But they're out there.

I wear bibs and puff on a Missouri Meerschaum, but I never developed much taste for "corn likker" or going barefoot... No banjo either, but I play a little guitar from time to time.

I've heard all the jokes. Lol
