My Dixon Horn
« on: July 27, 2009, 03:32:04 PM »
Heres a horn I entered into to Dixon's this year.  Not traditional, which didn't judge very well, but had my creativity into it.  This was the first time I entered a horn for judging and I walked away with a lot of good points to work at for next year.  Can't wait.  Next year I'd like to enter a horn and get the rifle done I bought parts for this year.  My bank account is screaming, or was that my wife!?    Jason

I'm no judge but looks good to me  I really like the poured bands never thought of that on a horn..... but then almost all the horns I've seen here make me say" you can  do that on a horn"

Jason,

How come this is the first time we are seeing this horn here on the ALR.  You need to post your completed work here for all to see.

Randy,

Not sure what you mean?  I did the finishing touches on the horn two days before Dixon's.  I took photos of it but didn't have a chance to up load to photobucket.  Hope that answers your question. ;D

I think it is very beautiful and nice work!!  Would you be willing to share the "specific" feedback that was cited to keep it from receiving and award??

Thanks for sharing it!

That's a very nice looking horn indeed!  I'm with Randy - how come we are not seeing pictures of this sort of work on the ALR?  Don't be bashful - please post pictures of other horns you are working on as well.

Nice work.  Love the way you poured those rings.

Jason,

I was just thinking that almost everyone makes some of their own accoutrements, but we don't see a lot of people posting their accoutrements to the Accoutrements Forum.  I know I like seeing work done by other members.

A couple of years ago a member of the ALR, and a horner, said in a post that if all of us who make the accoutrements would post them in the Accoutrements Forum then this forum could be almost as active as the Blackpowder Shooting Forum or the Gun Building Forum.

I, for one would like to see more activity here.

Jason, very nice horn and I recall seeing this horn is the accouterment section at Dixons.  There were alot of great looking decorated horns.  I'm sure the judges had their hands full trying to determine the winner so I'm sure the slightest or smallest area not quite 'right' (if thats even the right word) keeps one from ribboning (and I'll join that ranking with you).  Hopefully your critique is insightful and helpful towards the next submission.  Great job on this one despite its ranking. I liked it.
Gary

And, I'll also agree with Tim and Randy.  Lets see some more accouterments made by more of our members.  One of the greatest time I had this weekend was not only looking at what all the leather bag and horn makers had to offer, but also look at their 'miscellaneous' accouterments that were often accompanying their wares.  Certainly worth the travel to Dixons just for that.  So many new ideas, so little time.  Seriously trying to arrange time to make the CLA show in a couple of weeks.  We'll see.

Tim,

the critique sheet was very extensive but some of the things which they dinged me on was the "overall presentation would be better with less egg shaped raw horn"  Round is better through out the horn.  The base plug was not at a 90 degree angel with the base of the horn ( it had a slight angle to it)  the Central theme between the bird and heart needed contrasts provided by shading lines etc. Staples are too bold/heavy.  On the spout the rings and grooves need cleaned up.  Base needs finish refinement and off center (the off center was very, very small but still off center)

Don't get me wrong here there was a lot of good comments but I really walked away with a lot of information and since this was my first time entering anything at Dixon's I learned a lot and hopefully will come away with something next year.  What surprised me was they didn't give a ribbon out to the category of horns in the Junior or Plane category.  None at all.  They felt there were to many issues to give a ribbon.  That surprised me!  Especially in the Junior category with kids upto 16 years were allowed to enter.

What I did like was they spoke about every category and described why they picked a certain piece for a ribbon.  That didn't happen with the rifle's that were entered.  They just called a number on the tag and gave the ribbon for that category.  Kinda bored me a little.  I said something to Chuck about it and he said he would look at it.

Tim I hope I answered your question.

Berks it is a nice horn. However the judging at Dixons is difficult to say the least. I have been there and taken ribbons both times. However the first time my horn was knocked down for not being completely round the whole length. The next horn was even less semetrical and it received best in class. You can never tell what they are looking for. I beleive it depends on who is doing the judging and what they look for in a horn personaly. Maybe I'm wrong but I have never figured out there sistem yet. However they do give some good advise in the writeups, at least mine.

I agree with you.  There is so much on the table to look at.  Usually when I pick out a horn to work on I always remember that not everyone who carried a horn back in the day had the perfect horn.  I'll just keep doing what I do and maybe someday a ribbon will be hanging on what I have entered.

That's a blue ribbon horn in my book!!  Very nice overall look and feel.  I think if everything is too perfect it gets less interesting.

They have their own criteria and that's needed in order to judge among the outstanding entries.  But many horns are more interesting when they are not "classic" or "perfect".  I would listen to the critiques but not necessarily change the way you do some things so as to be "on the money".
