New lock - video of sparking added
« on: March 08, 2020, 12:22:51 AM »

So here are a few photos of our latest lock we've been working on.  This represents an English or perhaps even an American made lock from around 1800-1820.  It measures 4 3/4" in length by 7/8" in width just behind the fence.  It features a stirup on the tumbler and a roller frizzen.  As with our round faced English lock, all parts except the frizzen, cock and top jaw are 100% machined from barstock.  The lock action is very smooth, fast and sparks produced are plentiful.  This will be standard on our Mountain Rifle Kit and will be available individually as well.

A waterproof pan version will be available in a probably 3 months.  Thanks for everybody's patience with this project.  It took a little more time than anticipated to develop, but the results are well worth the effort.  If you have any questions, just let us know.

All the best,
Jim and Katherine

Kudos for not covering the sear spring screw up with the reverse curl in the bridle.  Nice lock.

It looks good but we’re getting a lot of kudos before we’ve even seen the thing spark. I hope it works well. There’s a lot of time and thought that has gone into this lock.

From the measurements given this sounds like it could be an alternative replacement lock. Looks real good.

Hi Jim,
It looks like a great lock but the top jaw screw shape is different.  Is there an original you modeled that from?

Oh, it sparks well!  I'll get a video tomorrow.  Thanks!

Thanks everybody for the nice comments.  I think those who end up using this lock will be very pleased.

Smart Dog.  I'll have to see if I can find some pictures.  You see a range on the later English styled locks.  Some screws are about spherical on top, some are more or less spherical with the top flattened off and sometimes you see the more squarish profile.  There was a particular lock with a waterproof pan that I got this from, but am having trouble finding it now.  Nice thing is that it can be easily modified if someone would prefer a more rounded profile.

Jim,
That looks great!  I wish I didn't have so many locks sitting in my inventory waiting for to be put on a gun...

However....
I really need a lock exactly like that in left hand.  Think you might turn that CNC machine wrong way up?
Anxiously waiting,
Norm

She’s a beaut Jim. I’ll be picking up a regular and waterproof version for sure. I’d also love to see the pics of the original jaw screw. A screw gun in a vise, a file, and 5 minutes will make it round if needed. I like the option to shape as desired, if desired. Well done.

Smartdog.  Here are a couple options for the top jaw.  The first has been softened into more or a radius.  This fits the feel of the screw I was trying to emulate better.  I think I'll probably go this route.  The second is fully rounded.  Though I think it looks good and is appropriate, it's also a bit on the ordinary side and I think the screw with a bit more angular profile works better with the high breasted cock.

Here is a lock Frank House made that is directly copied from an original with the profile I'm shooting for.   I have photos of the original somewhere, but will have to find them.  Incidently the waterproof version I'll be making will be quite similar to this lock by Frank.

I'd also like to mention again my appreciation for the help Frank has provided.  He's a true student of this guns we love and his assistance has been truly appreciated.

Here's another version.  I think I'll settle on this.  Also here's another original with a squarish profile.

I have one of your SMRs in 40 caliber. I was one of the first people to buy one and the 45 caliber wasn’t available. I will be ordering a 45 caliber when the waterproof lock is available.

Really a good-looking lock, Jim!  I like everything about it, especially that frizzen roller.  Does the foot of the frizzen have to be hardened like the frizzen face?
Not a big SMR fan, but I'm sure I can come up with some use for the lock.  Really nice workmanship.

Hi Jim,
I meant no criticism just it looked different.  I much prefer the appearance of the two examples of your lock that you show rather than Frank House's version.
