Restoring hammer cup
« on: March 14, 2020, 04:30:23 AM »
have an original 1863 Remington .58 rifle. Looks brand new. Almost. It was dry fired a lot
Inside the hammer cup, a “firing pin” has formed where the hammer struck the nipple.
Would one be able to have a tig welder fill that back in? I would then smooth it out if required inside.

Got it out shooting this past Saturday, had several different sized projectiles to use. First shot Off hand  at 50 yds was in the 9 ring.
I didn`t work up any loads, 60 gr 3F with crisco for lube. There was no attempt at grouping, just blasted of about 20-25 shots.
One thing- I neglected to ensure the tang bolt was completely snugged down, and i lost a small chip directly behind the tang......i didn`t even notice till i was disassembling for cleaning.

On the builders note- i have not yet filled the divot in the hammer face.

It might be harder on the new nipple, until the cup has a flattened surface for the nipple strike.

Don't think I'd worry about filling it in.  Maybe an end Mill to dress it back flush, and just shoot it.

Smallpatch makes a really good point for both solutions. As a retired welder/fabricator/instrument maker it is very definitely weldable with tig. Either solution will still require an appropriate sized end mill.

I have an end mill that will work, and it will need the rust up in the cup to be cleaned out before it get filled with weld. I`ll probably test it to see if it works after i smooth it out before i get any welding in it. I don`t know any pro tig welders, and i only mig, which i am actually pretty good at.

This is one of the easy jobs in reconstruction of a lock. Did many. All it takes is a good welder and a boring tool , made or brought. You must anneal the hammer after welding and before boring. Seems to me that people are getting of topic here.

Another thought is to flatten out the inside of the cup and soft solder a a piece of steel inside the cup. This can all be done without damaging the cock.
