I am fortunately still working... people stlll want their electricity. But it's the weekend so I got to try my hand at some leather work today.

It isn't necessarily my favorite. But I'm working on it right now so I guess I hold it in some regard. I need to do some finish work on the edges and figure out some kind of closure...

Here's my attempt at a Lyman bag (and my first real attempt at bound edges)

I had started this a week or so ago and it was languishing on my work table, so I decided to work on it today and spent the better part of the day on it. I decided to put a strap on it although originally I wanted it to be fabric and leather. But I was short on the strapping I originally had in mind, so solid leather is what it came to be.

Jerry sent me a copy of the pattern he used to make his. So I may make a couple more... One a belt bag and the other with my originally intended fabric/leather shoulder strap. Just have to see.

Thank you, Marc, for starting this one! Here's a couple of things I have done over the past year...

In August, I was fortunate to be included in the 2019 CLA "New & Aspiring Artist" display in Lexington -- for that display, I made up a leather & linen Haversack...

And since my Mom's side of the family has roots in southern VA in the 18th century, an Early VA pouch was in order...

PrairieD those are top shelf for certain. I love the detail on the flap of the pouch.

Awesome work everyone!

I recently made a bark tan deer hide vest for my brother in law, Russ Dahlstrom from Dunrustic. Russ tanned the hides, and my wife and I made the vest.

Also, a bark tan deer hide sheath for a great knife made by Joe Schell.

Thank you to all for posting, great stuff indeed.

Regards,

Doug

Mike from Ok, don't be concerned about using leather for the strap versus cloth.  Jim Webb (who has owned 200 original bags and wrote a book) says most originals had leather straps.  It makes sense, as you'd wear out cloth a lot faster than leather.  Many of the ones with cloth straps now originally had leather.  God Bless,   Marc

I had posted a picture of this last month but I really like it.
Irish shot head and a horn small enough to call a pocket horn. Holds enough for a weekend outing.

I hear ya Marc. And it makes sense that any pouch made at home would be all leather... Likely all made from the same hide. But a fabric strap sure looks nice sometimes, even if it was historically rare.

I hate to even post my bag, after that amazing quill work. But here is a double bag I just finished up. I dyed it with vinegaroon, sewed it with waxed linen thread.

I like it Bull. It’s a likely bag. Super.

I agree with Bob. Not a thing wrong with that bag at all. That would be a super bag for a smoothie.
