a Groundhog bag
« on: March 20, 2020, 08:13:01 PM »
I am in the beginning process of putting something very special together. To wet your appetite here is the bag that will be going with it. I do believe you can call it a "proper" groundhog bag!

Now they are some good looking bags right there.  And tell me if I'm wrong but I see Curt Lyles handwritten written all over them.

I never met him but did buy some bark tan hides and a little squirrel bag a few years ago to go inside my bag for balls, flints, whatever.  He has a very distinctive look which I like and a nice personality to boot.

Is that a case-skinned groundhog with the bottom seam sewn shut?

Very cool regardless!

Those are very cool. When I was a kid in the early ‘80s, farmers in NW Ohio used to almost beg us to shoot the groundhogs in their soy bean fields. I wish I’d have been more aware of these things then.

Very cool.

I assume that there are just a few folks bark tanning groundhog hides on a limited basis... I can not find one for sale anywhere online.

Mike the bag size is 6 wide 9 long and it is case skinned meaning there's no side seams, it's a good sturdy leather for a pouch and if they're too small and thin you can line them with a linen or a feed sack material and they stiffen up. The older the groundhog the better the Hyde is.

Mike I have a friend that tans my deer hides groundhog and squirrel hides and he's 250 miles away so I don't see him very often but he either bring some or pick some up when he's here. But I'm not looking to sell any. Curt

Thank you for responding sir. And I pretty much figured a fellow would would have to know someone who does it to get one. I'm not looking for any at the moment anyway... If I drag one more leather hide in the house my Mrs. may end up adding my own hide to the pile.  :D
