Any one have knowledge of an early gunsmith S. Buchanan.  I found one of his gun's (flintlock) that sold through an auction house so at least I know there was an S. Buchanan, the barrel I am researching had a "barrel type" nipple base and is over 30 inches.  If anyone can shed some little on this maker I would be grateful.

Jerry Noble lists an "Samuel Buchanan" in Ithaca, New York working in the 1820-1823 era, and Lockport, NY in 1830. Jerry also lists a "Samuel Buchanan" in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1850, but that seems too late to be your man.

Welcome to the forum.

"The Gunsmiths and Gunmakers of Eastern Pennsylvania" by Whisker & Chandler (published 1982 by Old Bedford Village Press) lists a Samuel Buchanan, about 1815, in Halifax, Dauphin County.

I saw a fantastic Buchanan rifle and thought it was western pa. Natl Road patchbox
