"Timber Rattler"...Horn With Pewter Snake:
« on: March 31, 2020, 04:47:00 PM »
Sqrldog asked me to see what I could come up with in the way of a horn to go with his rifle "Timber Rattler". I had an idea but had no idea of what it would take to get it done. The second post below shows the process of cutting the Pewter body out of a large Pewter ice bucket liner, that was the relatively easy part, it came out to right at 72". Making the pattern of a snake that wrapped around a cone and then getting the Pewter snake to do it was another story. I probably made and adjusted 15 patterns and this is the second snake. Enough...

It is about 15" around the outside curve and 12" tip to tip. The Base is Cherry and about 3" across held in by 4 Iron pins. The tip has Eight panels on it. The snake is pewter, it's tail is a piece of horn, overall it, the snake is 24" long, it is held in place by hide glue and small nails. The Pewter itself was pitted and tarnished so I didn't do much to it, did layout some scales. The rattle was boiled, flattened, filed to shape, boiled again and clamped to the horn to take on the shape. The horn is colored with some dye and Brown shoe polish all over. The Butt has a coat of "Satin Wax" on it and should darken with age.

Tim I really like the horn. It will go well with the NC rifle Joe Schell built. Just goes to prove that all you need to do is give an artist an idea and get out of the way. Thanks for a great horn. Tim C (no r).

That's coming up next just starting to plan a bag. I have enough Timber Rattler hide left from the sling that I could cover a bag flap.

Dang, Tim...that’s the coolest thing I’ve seen all day!  I love it...and I usually don’t care much for snakes...

Great job!

Very nice work, but it gives me the chills just looking at it. I've had several of them in my shop and my wife almost stepped on one 42" long closing up her chickens one night.

You're killing me man.  I am glad that one has a designated home.  My wallet would be scared otherwise.  I love that horn!

Here's Tim's earlier snake horns.....

Very creative and well executed, but I think I may have mentioned before that snakes are not exactly my favorite subject.

If you drop dried beans inside, you can make a real “ rattler” out of it. 😁

I suppose if I don't say it, M. Brooks will: would make social distancing easier at the grocery store!
