Well that's annoying!

Any of you fine folks have a solution to this issue? I put my file down, and it seems like every metal bit within 2 meters sticks to it!

Tool demagnetizer. A machine shop with a nice brown and sharpe grinder with a good magnetic chuck with a demagnetizing feature. Only takes a cycle or so. Stops that silliness. BJH

Coat it with silicone, leave it overnight, then peal it off.

Might work....

A good rap on a chunk of wood helps demagnetize - for a while.

Magnetized tools are a pain.  Sharp edged tools develope a magnetism seemingly on their own as well.  This is how chisels and gouges can become dull.  You set them down on a bench with filings, the filings stick and then you push it in wood.  The shavings dig into the edge.  A demagnitizer is a good thing.  It's also a very good practice not to set a chisel on a bench.  I always try to set them on something to prop them up.

YUCK!  Take some duct tape or masking tape and pat the sticky side on the filings.  Or get a demagnetizer.

...and it doesn’t appear one need get yucky at all....

Do you think one of these would work?

You can probably buy a degauss plate from Grainger or maybe MSC the last one I purchased for my manufacturing business wasn't that expensive.

I use one like Justin shows above all the time.  Very inexpensive and works just fine.

Now you don't have to sweep the floor . Be sure to look in those filings for Siler and L&R  flies

I started using poster putty to keep gravers clean, and have recently used it when filing with small files that had excess magnetisms.

I keep a hunk handy for stabbing/wiping gravers on, or roll a ball of it across the file. Gets filled-knead it around a little for a fresh surface. Some tools are worse than others for sure.

Demagnetizing is a best option, just haven't made/acquired a gizmo for such yet.

I use the same one Justin showed. Those little chips are a real pita when doing fine engraving.

Jerry,

You probably use chalk to stop a file loading up don't you?
It won't help much with magnetism I don't suppose though.

Saw this the other day but have not tried it yet. Seems simple enough.

saw a magnetizer/demagnatizer trick using one of the old trigger style soldering irons.
was trying to find it again on YouTube to post it, but my search Fu is lacking.
and all the people home in my neighborhood is straining our internet provider..
