Allegany - Western PA squirrel rifle
« on: April 03, 2020, 01:07:27 AM »
I've started a rifle alla Thomas Allison:  .25 cal. 44" Rayle barrel, nice walnut stock I bought from Chris Laubach several years ago.  Daryl's been on me for some time to get at it, so here goes..a .240" ball weighs just over 20 gr.

Taylor, is that a small Siler lock?

Taylor, I bet Daryl would like that .25 in a 15/16" size barrel! ;)

It's got a 1" breech, thus it should be OK for a nice carrying weight, Barry.

I was trying to help you bulk up.  😉 I know it will be a fine rifle.

I really admire Thomas Allison's work - can't wait to see your rendition of his carving!

Rich:  it's Chambers' Classic American, I think that's what it's called.  It's a large Siler rather than the smaller one.  I needed the depth in the lock plate.  I rounded the tail a bit and filed the tail flat.  I also reshaped the cock to give it a bit more of a pigeon breasted look, and rounded the pan.  The rifle I'm emulating used an English lock.
I'm looking forward to carving this stock.  It's a nice dense piece of walnut, and the reference rifle has both incised and relief carving, as well as some interesting scalloping along the butt stock lower moulding.

Well, I've got the butt plate on and the triggers in, and shaped up the buttstock this afternoon.  Tomorrow, in goes the trigger guard.

Looks like it’s shaping up nicely...and some interesting figure in the butt stock. I like how that modified lock looks, too.

Looks great so far. Love the walnut.

I am having a problem picturing you and Daryl up there in the frozen north with a 25 caliber.  For mice in the shop maybe?
kind regards, heinz

MAHVELOUS piece of walnut you have there - could really become European in appearance.  Does it have a few brothers or sisters hiding away anywhere?

I know that Daryl is getting weak and frail in his old age.  Hope he can bear the mighty 7 lb this rifle is going to weigh.

Outstanding work, as usual, Taylor.  Very envious with your skill.  I just have to keep practicing more.

You bet.  I once apologized when an old friend was visiting, for my messy bench, and he said, "a clean bench isn't making any money!"  It'll get cleaned up several times before I start my next project.  The floor too.

Yes, the forestock is plain straight grained dark walnut, but the butt grain curves with the comb and toe line, and is quite colourful and very dense.

The .25 is a lot of fun and is a great caliber for small game at reasonable ranges and good shot placement.  I have an SMR with a swamped (48") .25 by Ed Rayl and the first year I got it, I didn't use another gun squirrel hunting that year.  I got 38 squirrels with it that season.  Have fun.  James Levy

If I put a vent in it, I could fire it now.  Got the triggers filed in perfectly, and the guard inlet today.  I prefer working with hard maple...just sayin'.

Taylor...you surely do move on w/ the building... a  few   days and  it's nearly done.   The proportions  overall are excellent and the choice and size  of the lock really fits right in. It'll be interesting to see how the stain and finish will affect the color of the beautiful  walnut......Fred

Beautiful lines Taylor.  Maybe they'll help tame the wicked recoil from that big bore.  ;-)   God Bless, Marc
