Last thing before browning/bluing finished this Mother's Day!  Engraved the barrel with # and date, and signed top flat.  Making up browning reagent Wednesday...begin browning immediately.  At this point, I think I'll boil it for a dark blue/black...barrel, lock, triggers.  From the images in "Longrifles of Western PA" that's the finish that the original sports, to my eye.

This morning, after seven apps of Tung Oil, I burnished the stock down to the wood with ScotchBrite and 0000 steel wool.  Several light hand rubbed coats now and it's done.

On Wednesday, I went up to the local university where the Chemistry professor helped me mix a batch of browning/bluing solution:  74 ml Nitric acid, 67 ml Hydrochloric Acid, 1 oz. iron nails, 30 ox. distilled water.  (Neider Brown/Blue).  Starting that afternoon, I began the browning and it took immediately.  Yesterday after six apps in my damp box, I boiled the barrel lock and trigger parts in distilled water for 20 minutes, and carded off the black oxide.  I used 0000 steel wool on the barrel and my Brownell's soft wire wheel for the smaller parts.  It turned out very nicely.  today, I finished assembling the lock and triggers, and put everything to the stock...here's the results!

Taylor,
Beautiful work, as we have all come to expect from you.  A work of art.

As a side note, I am stunned by the speed at which you created this rifle. I reviewed all the posts of your progress to see the a rough timeline of how you progressed.  I looked simply to see what the difference was between my slow, millimetre by millimetre progress compared to someone who has built enough rifles to work efficiently at a high quality.
You completed several tasks in a day that often take me a week or more.  This gives me the impetus to do better, and I thank you for that.  It's not a complaint that this hobby takes too long, it's simply an example of someone who watches a master and wonders "how do I emulate that?"

I'm sure the answer is, practice, practice, practice...

Cheers,
Norm

Wonderful Taylor. As a sincere compliment, I thought it was beautiful and ready for finish before the patchbox, inlays and carving.  It has graceful lines good sir. Bravo.
God bless, Marc

Taylor,

Your rifle looks, as always, top notch!
But, what's happening with everyone on ALR?
All the rifles I see become nicer and nicer, where will this end?

Thanks everyone for your lovely comments.  Regarding the time line for this build, I started it immediately after I finished Brian's Rupp rifle, knowing that spring is upon us and summer soon follows.  I don't accomplish much in the shop during the summer - winter is my creative time.  So I went at it with purpose, although there were several days that I did not work on the rifle.  And there are jobs that just cannot be hurried and are tedious to be frank.  Polishing buttplate and trigger guard, locks, etc. just seem to take up a lot of time.  And when carving the stock, there comes a point when I have to slow right down, removing wood little by little, turning the stock this way and that in the light to catch the spots that need a little more.  Still, it went along smoothly without a hitch.  The patchbox took some time.  It used to take me a week to design, cut out and inlet a pieced brass patchbox, but this one required 3 days including the release mechanism, springs, etc.  One thing that has increased the speed at which I work, and will help everyone who does this craft, is knowing when chisels require sharpening, and maintaining that crazy sharp edge.  I keep my stones and strop at one end of the bench, ready for touch up sharpening.  Also, removing tool marks used to take me more time than expedient, but now I've learned to use scrapers...really makes more efficient use of time.  The scraped finish needs very little extra work before finishing...a great time saver.
Ed Rayl uses tough steel to make his barrels, so draw filing is one job that requires time and commitment.  In this case, I used my 22" mill bastard file, a 6" bastard cut file, and 180 grit aluminum oxide abrasive cloth, backed with a file.  With a rust blue, or a polished brown, one should probably keep going down to say 320 grit, but I didn't in this case, except on the lock and triggers which got down to 600 grit.  The extra polish really pays off.
This rifle is several firsts for me.  Walnut fullstock with carving, Western PA theme, rust blued furniture on a longrifle, minimal engraving.  I'm satisfied with the result, and look forward to shooting it.  I'll post some pics of how that goes.  Thanks again to all those who commented.

Daryl and I took the rifle to the range this morning and did some test shooting.  First, it's a pleasure to shoot, and after shooting rifles in calibre up to Daryl's 69, it's a bit of a funny.  There is no recoil in the 9 1/2 pound rifle, and no lock jar at all.  We started out with 15 gr. FFFg GOEX and went as high as 25 gr., shooting five shot strings.  The 25 gr. charge has a pleasing crack to it, but 20 gr. was the most accurate with the balls and patches we had on hand.  Daryl shot the target pictured below using 20 gr. FFFg GOEX in both the charge and pan, a #3 buckshot measuring .250" and some reclaimed patches that measured in the .018" range.  We used saliva for lube.  Loading was very easy, even with the 1/4" hickory rod, but we used a 3/16" steel range rod for this exercise.

After this target, we drifted the rear sight over to centre the group in the bull.  Neither of us are impressed with the accuracy so far, but more testing hopefully will improve the shooting quality some.  No filing was required on either sight.  Range was 25 paces/yards.  Shooting was from a portable rest.

Whats not to like? Your wood to metal fit is superb. The carving is splendid. The finish of the metal and the wood is seamless. That is truly a wonderful rifle. Congratulations!

Sorry to add more to the insipid praise category but after following this thread I just have to say that rifle is a sight to behold and a true work of art.
