Taylor - absolutely marvelous. I love the way those inlays appear to have "grown" there.

Beautiful work Taylor! Your insetting is as good as it gets. Little bore rifles are my favorite.

I'm working on the last of the inlays - the patchbox.  I made eight silver escutcheon plates for the barrel retaining pins and an oval for the cheekpiece...all inlet.   Here's some pics of the progress.

That's going to be a great looking gun, Taylor. I am a big fan of those National Road patchboxes. Can't wait to see it after you engrave it.

My 16 yr. old grandson saw it yesterday, and said it looked like layers of coloured stone.  If feels like stone during the inletting process too.

Bob, I haven't seen Chris for years.  But I understand through a mutual friend that he is doing fine in Lumby.

I'm plodding along with the patchbox inlet, my friends.  This box has five piercings so it's slow going.  One of the neat things about this build is my need for super sharp chisels to cut across grain on this rock hard walnut has caused me to drag out a stone I haven't used for years, and it has been stellar in doing the sharpening job.  I'm excited about this because along the bottom on both sides of the buttstock is some carving that involves a chip and slash sequence, and all of the chips are cut with a sweep or gouge across the grain.  Once I have the box finished, I think that'll be my next job.

That’s a really nice rifle, Taylor.  Love the lines, and the box is a dandy.  It’s always more fun to build something for yourself.  Great job!  Best,

Thanks again for the praise.  The butt plate and trigger guard started life as John Armstrong sand castings from TOW.  The trigger guard particularly, received considerable filing to bring it more closely in line with the style used in
Allegany Co. PA.

Well, I'm almost finished the carving...on to engraving next.  I finished the cheek carving today.  I found carving walnut quite a challenge.  Tools wanted to follow grain and hard spots - had to fight and persevere throughout.  I hope it looks better oiled.

That buttstock carving is beautiful Taylor.  Looking forward to seeing everything "pop" once the finish is applied.

Very nice build Taylor, that patch box looks very challenging with complicated inlets! The carving is incredible too!
