A rifle gun for Silas
« on: April 05, 2020, 01:04:16 AM »
Back in December I was approached by a long time shooting buddy to create a rifle for his 13 year old son. He was curious about specs, primarily barrel size, length, and weight as well as trigger pull length, cast off and a number of other things. ALL good questions. After getting a look at the lad I mad comparisons to a young pup. The boy had big feet and big hands and I told my buddy that building a gun for him is like shooting at grouse, ya gots to know where he’s going. We decided on a B profile 38” .45. My friend Charlie Burton made the barrel and my other buddy David Rase mated it to a locally sourced piece of rock hard sugar tree. The gun is just a tad heavy for him now, but that won’t be the case for long. This gun is a “no school” what I commonly call “Shawhan School”. We went with Chambers Late Ketland (this one is scary fast), and Davis triggers. The buttplate and trigger guard are from Mike Brooks. Trigger pull 13 3/8”, cast off 1/4”.  Enjoy!

Wow!  Wayne, you really hit the bullseye with that one, and the young fellow looks like he agrees.

Marvelous way to hook a young one for our pastime.

Looks like another nice un out of Stoner Creek Forge!  Nice lines, Wayne, I like that one a lot, and wish that fine looking young feller many years of good use.

Shawhan School, I like it.  Hats off Wayne, you did a wonderful job on that rifle.  For not following any school, it sure has some great architecture.

Well done, Wayne. He'll be able to shoot that rifle for a few years, for sure.
He appears to be headed for Hunk-hood to me.  The girls will be all over that lad.
Good choice on stock length, too.

The look on young Silas' face says it all.  You are a good man Wayne.  Now go and reward yourself with a Bourbon for your efforts.

Nice looking gun. I have been thinking of exactly the same thing and ordered a B weight 45 caliber 38 inch barrel a couple days ago. Would like to know what your weight ended up at. What trigger guard is that? I to are a no school build it so it fits what you want. Someone once told me if I got something that was perfect I'd change some part of it. I like practical guns. I like the 37 to 38 inch barrels.

Nice rifle Wayne. Great that you helped a friend with a rifle for his son. I'm sure it's a rifle he will treasure for a long time.  He sure looks tickled to have a new rifle. Good on ya Stoner.

Wow!  Amazing gun.  He's is a blessed you man indeed.  Can't help compare this awesome rifle to my first which was a no-name CVAish model.   Here's hoping he cherishes and takes good care of it.
