Horn W/two Bands/A Little Paint And A Neat Tip
« on: April 10, 2020, 04:19:07 PM »
This is after a horn in Dr. Hopkins book "Bone Tipped & Banded Horns" on page 293.
This one is about 15" around the outside curve and 13 tip-to-tip. The butt is Maple held it with 4 iron pins that also hold the base band, it is painted alternately Red and Green. The second band is held in place by three pins. The tips is a two part antler and is what really caught my eye when I first looked through the book. It is attached to the neck with three more pins, the original used wood. It has 10 flats filed on it about 3/4" up from the bottom one with a small ring on it. (I was lucky and found a piece of antler that was kind of "V" shaped, that made it easier to carve out a solid ring). Thinking the ring was used to attach a cord to the stopper. ???

That is cool. Cows gonna run out of horns if you keep up this pace!

This is top of the line. Love the color and that band with the ring is very cool.

That is a very coherent and neat bit of work, particularly the tip.   I am sure that tip was a lot of work.   What tools did you use to carve the ring out of the antler?

 Thanks Mark,
Like I said the piece was "V" shaped so I started at the point and used a very fine toothed saw and cut a cube shape, then a small chisel, rasps and files to shape it and the panels. I drilled the hole when it was still pretty square. It was/is a very solid piece of antler.

Someone’s been a busy beaver while I was gone!  :)

Looks great! I love the little ringlet near the tip. Pretty intricate carving there.

Oh yeah.  That one is super cool.  I really enjoy the red and green on the base.  A very nice touch.  That tip looks tough to make to my eye.  I think you need to get some heavy linen and get a leash on that plug.   :-)   Great job Tim.   Now go get some mowing done at the farm and stop playing.    God Bless,   Marc

The alternating bands of red and green evoke Yuletide memories.

Perhaps if “Old St. Nick” had a horn, this might be it?  ;D
