Monica's Rifle
« on: August 02, 2009, 06:34:14 AM »
Here is my last rifle.  Number 34.  Built for Monica to hunt deer with, a .50 caplock.  Based on a Henry Albright rifle in Whisker's book "Gunsmiths of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania", page 65.  She wanted caplock, nickle silver hardware,  inlays including the sun, moon and stars, and a different hunter's star.  It has a Rice B weight 38" swamped barrel, blued steel.

The sideplate location caused me problems, but I solved them.  After this photo, I  engraved Monica's name on the plate.  I cut the stock from a blank.

Here is the changed hunter's star plus a 2000 Sacajawea dollar I added in.

I sawed the patchbox from a blank.  The ball puller is threaded in to keep the other parts from falling out.

The lid lifter spring is made from a piece of hacksaw blade.

I really like what you did to the patchbox innards.  Nice touch.

Herb, I like it a lot!!

The only thing that jumped out to me as a suggestion is to work on the drawing of your C scrolls & volutes  particularly the one right behind the cheekpiece. Also make sure the lines in the carving of the  C are not parallel. I don't think they are but they are awfully close.
The inside of the patch box is terrific

If Monica doesn't like it I can send you my address. ;D

Thanks for sharing the pics!

Tim, thanks for your comments.  It is very hard to carve a pretty volute.  And I see that Henry Albright's carving lines were not parallel in his rifle!.
