Bowsaw/framesaw
« on: April 11, 2020, 01:03:26 AM »
Got bored yesterday so started this project. Finished it up today. Used sugar maple scraps from my last gun project staining them with ferric nitrate. A fun little project.

Nice one!  I’ve been meaning to make one myself, along with a lot of other things...

Beautiful work.  I saw a plain version of this in use at Colonial Williamsburg.  God Bless,  Marc

Thanks all. Tim, the blade is 21-22 inches I think. It is a fun little project, I recommend it.

Yes, I've always wanted try one, need to chase down a couple blades. I take it the joints are Mortise and Tenon, are they free floating, pinned or glued?

  Thanks Again, Tim

The joints are mortise and tenon with the mortise longer than the tenon so that the joint can shift under tension. Note the rounded aspect of the joint to facilitate movement.  This is a good video on making a simple one:

You can put different blades in them; fine tooth for woodworking or coarse for rough cutting like I used. Coarse blades can be had at any hardware store. Finer blades can be had online from several sources.

After I posted I wondered if they were blind or through.

Glad you enjoyed it. These saws can be very fancy or very plain (utilitarian). To see lots of examples google "frame saw" in google images.

Of course, I'd rather have your saw! It is very handsome.
