Okay.  You don't need my boost.....but that is beautiful Ian!  Stunning work.  I especially like the rays of the sun you engraved, and how you ran the engraving onto both the blade and the brass ricasso.  You have met or topped your own extremely high standards.  God Bless,   Marc

Nicely done -- to my eye it has an Arabic flair to it ;D. Is there a sheath to go along with it? How about some specifications?

What a handsome sidearm! The “Arkansas Toothpick” seems to show a bit in the design.

Thanks everyone for the really nice comments!

No more than I normally would! Seriously though, I did the engraving work while the blade was still annealed so it was no problem

Thanks for tjat info Ian. Years ago I tried it but didnt have the blade annealed well enough and broke a few points. Your knife has a lot of nice detail even with out the engraving. Cool creation for sure.

Nicely done -- to my eye it has an Arabic flair to it ;D. Is there a sheath to go along with it? How about some specifications?

The concept was a Spanish blade that had been nicely re - handled at some point. The guard and handle would have been additions, but the brass ferrule may have been either new or reused from the original knife. Those brass panels on the blade would typically butt up against a metal sheath - Several people who know Spanish knives have questioned the guard on this one before I had pointed out my demented concept behind it.

Anyhow I can see what you are seeing in it. It is most interesting to trace details and influences over time, often times even something as simple as commonly used shapes that we might associate with the art of a particular culture have their origins elsewhere

Sorry no measurements, made it a few months back and don't have specs on it. The handle was from an ash surveyor's hub I had saved for years. Fittings were brass and wrought iron.

I did make a baldric type sheath to go with it but no photo

Beautiful job!  A Spanish belduque blade for sure.  Originally, I doubt it would have had the guard either.  usually the width of the blade at the handle was wide enough to stop the hand from sliding down it, but didn't help with catching a blade.  I saw a large side knife from the Nuestra Senora de Atocha shipwreck (1622) that had brass at the base of the blade similar to yours.  James Levy

Thank you for the post James - definitely a Belduque inspired blade. Some have an almost Medieval feel, really cool details like paneled sections with engraved borders, long false edges and generally pretty heavy spines.
I saw your post last night and searched online for at least a couple hours hoping to find an image or two of the Achota wreck blade you describe. No luck but saw a lot of other incredible pieces. Thanks for the info regardless, always good to be able to put credible dates with objects of interest!
