Bag #26 - Gentleman's Haversack or Despatch Bag
« on: April 11, 2020, 05:23:52 PM »
Hi Folks,

I just finished this one up.  It is an all-leather haversack, or a dispatch rider's bag.  11-1/2" square body.  3 ounce bridle leather fully lined in soft suede cowhide.  Buckskin scalloped welt in the side seams.  Cowhide stiffener and pocket inside the top back, which also provides a strong anchor for the straps.  Richard Lanni crafted the 18th century style buckles which I darkened and added iron tongues.  Buckskin rolled inside top edge.  Waxed linen hand stitching throughout (felt like miles of it).

This bag was one of those projects that fought me the whole time.  Overcoming adversity seems to be a key to our hobby.   :-)

God Bless,   Marc

Great bag Marc, Really nicely done, the attention to detail is like icing on a cake.  The cake is really good but the icing brings it out.

Wow Marc.  It’s going to be tough to tip that one.  That buttery soft look you get is a show stopper.  You are truly a master at leatherwork and someone we all look up to.

Thank you all gents.

Mike, thank you for the kind words, but I am no master of leatherwork.  Just a traveler on the journey like you.  It is nice to have some real masters to learn from and lean on here on the boards.

For those of you that mentioned the buckles, look up Richard Lanni on Facebook.  He casts those beauties in all sorts of shapes and sizes from originals.

God Bless, and Happy Easter,    Marc

Excellent job Marc, love the color.  I ordered some buckles from Richard Lanni and can't wait to put on a couple of projects in the finishing phases now.  Keep on stitching.
