Money shoot 200 yds nearest the X!
« on: August 03, 2009, 01:52:46 AM »
Bl Mt ML Shartlesville, Pa shot this match among others this weekend Shot it Sat Rain like crazy today...

Musket bull over a Jaeger hunter offhand fixed sights a buck a shot for $100 bill nearest the X....

Many of us kept about 40 % of the shots in the black.  I had a 9 then later a full in 10 at 9 0'clock.  More shots later I managed a liner 10.   Few more shots ol Bob Walker shot a 10 closer in than mine ::)  Still more shots later young John Arrowwood shot a full in 10 kissing the X ring.  Looks as if he took the cash. ;D

Dang, Roger, how big is that target? How big is the X ring?

I can't see a normal size bull at 200 yards, much less think about cutting the ten ring, and especially the X, at that range.

No matter what size of the bull, that's good shooting.

After seeing the targets you showed me at Dixon's, I can easily believe your hitting the ten ring at 200.

God bless

Overall dia of bull 12 in  10 ring 4 in X ring 1 3/4 in

You don't see the bull - Kentucky windage - holding over your rifle covers the target.

Fixed sights being the rule - some folks could have a specific rifle saved for that match sighted in for 200 yds and hold 'on'! I do not.  Its a different match for sure and that is the only club shooting one such far as I know.   It's once a year.......... :)

For long range rifle shooting, we've learned from long range handgun shooting, to hold the front sight over the rear notch, and put the blade or bead at the 6 o'clock position on the target. This is how one can shoot the steel sheep target at 300 meters with a 4" M29. That front sight is wide, but the bullet hits in the middle of it, right on the plate - pretty simple.  Same type of aiming as with the rifle.  It is the only situation where I aim at the 6 o'clock position.  This allows one to see the target.

Taylor's old Hawken, the .62 with the 10 lines per inch fiddleback stock, had a bright line on the barrel from wear from leaning the rifle against the bench at the range when loading. This white 'spot' looked like a thin white line against the browning when viewed over the sights.  Placing the line along the top flat of the rear sight, and the blade at 6 o'clock on the target gave him a perfect 'hold' for the 325 yard 12" rock we used to shoot at the Squamish range back in the 70's. We hit that rock with everything from my wife's .36 to his .62 and including my m29 4". No big deal - BUT - hitting an X offhand to win a 200 yard offhand match - THAT's a big deal.

Way to go, Roger.
Those 2 tens are better than someone's lucky X.
