This gun was completed about a year ago, however I never got around to posting photos of the finished gun other than a couple pics for reference in a couple of threads. One barrel is .62 cal rifled an the other is 12 gauge smooth, both made by Ed Rayle. Barrel finish is a faux twist of my own concoction. The barrels are standard breeched with a plug, I faked them to look like a patent flint breech. The gun was started 3 years or so ago in a Ron Scott class at the NMLRA Gunsmithing seminar, and the wood came from Ron. The sights, trigger guard and barrel escutcheons were hand made. Lock is a modified Chambers Early Ketland. The Oak case was a bigger pain the make than the gun - I have real problems with straight lines!

Nice Curtis! The stub twist etching looks great and the case is perfect for the gun both in style and materials. Did you buy baize from Hainesworth or from Dyson? As far as shooting, anyone familiar with these guns knows the stock design is the best ever for a hunting gun. Great project and really nice photos!

Another OUTSTANDING job ready to take to the range or field.
These are classic guns and represent the epitome of the flintlock
rifle before the onslaught of the caplocks made them obsolete.
We are assuming the Alex Henry rifle will be to this level as well.

I'm working on something similar, a little earlier though.
I'm going to put one of Jim Kibler's new waterproof locks on it.
I have a .62 rifle and 20 ga barrel for it.

Remarkable work Curtis, and a joy to behold. Dave's comment on the worth of this design for a hunting rifle is also spot on. Nothing points or comes to shoulder as nicely as the English Sporting rifle. As a testament to that statement, years ago our club featured a rifle duel involving a horizontal pivoting bar which had a circular disc welded to each end. Two contestants would come to the line with rifles down, and on command would raise their rifles and fire. The first to hit was obvious as the other disc moved out of line of fire immediately, making a hit on it for all intents and purposes, impossible. My brother Daryl was undefeated in this contest using his percussion English sporting rifle in .69 cal. If his contestant didn't shoot from the hip, he was toast.
