Set Triggers

I have an Isac Haines Rifle with a single trigger.  What would be involved to change it to double set triggers.

The first thing to look and see if there is room in the trigger guard and is the sear
in the lock setting low and require a custom made set trigger?Does the lock have
a "fly"to make set triggers useable.A number of things are involved in a gun that was
not intended to have set triggers to begin with.Is this an antique or a close replica
of a known rifle?

It is a replica of an original.  I do not know the maker of the rifle. No marks or names any where on the rifle.

OK but the first note I sent is still in effect.

I would need an experienced person to look at it for your answer.  I am not that familar with lock parts.
I might be better off to leave it as is.  It has a light trigger pull with the single trigger that is in it now.

Unless your target shooting, I would probably leave as is if it has a light pull currently.  If your wanting to target shoot, sounds like a good transition into another specialty gun!  If you want to change it, it can likely be done.  You could also install a single set in the current space, if the guard bow is tight.

Single set triggers require more vertical height through the trigger area than double set triggers.

You will need to find a set of triggers whose plate is as wide or wider than the plate currently in the rifle.  I have done this transition on several rifles, and it isn't too big a deal, if everything has been worked out first.

If your gun is of recent manufacture, it will likely have a fly in the tumbler.  All you would have to do is look at the tumbler when you clean the lock after shooting.   The biggest problems would be  would your trigger guard have to be moved or replaced after correctly locating the DST to work with your lock.  Second as Taylor stated the width of the DST will likely be less than that of the plate on your ST.

The owner I bought this rifle from changed it from Flintlock to percussion.  I had Dale Johnson change it back to Flintlock for me using a
siler lock.
I thought I might like a Double set trigger but didn't know it might be a big problem.  I don't live near any gun smith whom I could get the change done so I will leave it as it is.

Anyone know where I can find a picture of an original Haines Rifle.  Google is not any help.

I believe there are a couple Haines rifles in volume 1 of Rifles of Colonial America.

I'm fairly sure that the Haines rifles in Rifles of Colonial America are single triggers.
When you say an Isaac Haines reproduction, just  how historically accurate is your rifle ?  Unless you have a close  copy of particular Isaac Haines riflle, what I would let guide your choice is whether you intend to target shoot and whether the conversion is mechanically feasible.

Good luck,

Just my opinion but I would leave it alone. You stated that the trigger pull was light. I would just practice more with it. I have two target guns with double set triggers...but still prefer a light single trigger. But then we all have different likes.

I'll have to agree with you, Mike a set trigger is nice, but for my personal use I've always preferred a well made single trigger.
