Flints?

I've been shooting caplocks for so long I forgot where I used to buy flints. I think it was from Rich.

Where can I get some good ones?

I bought some nice flints at Stonewall Creek Outfitters.  Bought a large quantity.   Part English and  part French.  Quantity price $1.82 including shipping.  If needed, a Mizzy wheel and Dremel will shape them.

Check with Log Cabin Shop. They bought all of RE Davis stock of flints. Good quality black English flints. Priced right.

TOW sells Tom Fuller flints. I had forgotten that. They're good flints and i'll go with those.

When you do order them from TOW , If you want flat/no hump flint, just ask them and they will send them.

I've used flints from TOW (TF flints), Rich and a few others.  The best was always from TOW, Rich and some other source I absolutely can't recall.  Both English and French flints were great.  Those cut agate flints are worthless as were the T/C "flints".

That's no joke. I think those cut agate flints are more about separating a shooter from his money than they are about separating a projectile from a powder charge.

I got burned on that ONCE many years ago. I still have them too... One has a broken edge and the other 3 have never left the package.

There are flints... And there are flint shaped objects.

The cut agaste flint that came with my Lyman GPR was very lousy. I switched to the English flints from TOW with great success.

I second Stonewall creek.  Just got an order of 50 from them a couple of weeks ago and they were all good useable flints.  I ordered the 5/8 x 3/4 for my Cochran and manton lock and they fit superb.  On top of that, they were the cheapest by ordering 50.  If you shoot much, u will go through them so 50 isn't a lot.

The Stonewall owner told me that his flints were knapped in Germany from French and English rock.  I bought 200  7/8 x1". 

To get Track to pick your flints you have to order them separately.  If you order by the dozen, they already have them heat-sealed in a bag.

Here's the gun i'm getting from Dennis. Is that the large Siler lock? 3/4"x3/4" or 7/8"/3/4"? It seems Dennis used leather that's a bit too thick and it's keeping the flint from going deeper in the jaws. It's barely catching the flat on the flint.

What do you guys think? I don't want to bother Dennis about this. He's busy.

Use a different piece of leather, notch the leather for the screw, and chip off the back of the flint.  Also grind a flat on top of the flint.  Looks like that flint will go back farther, but it is squishing forward when the clamp is snugged.  I sometimes grind a flat on the top to help the fit of the flint. 

I bought the 3/4 x 7/8 size for a large Siler

I use old wallets and gloves for leather, thinner leather with new flints, I also cut a diamond  shaped hole in it . (large siler 3/4 x7/8 suggested by chambers & track of the wolf) 

Brad at Cabin creek here in Pa put a 7/8x1 inch in my golden age (same as large siler) saying "you want to use all of the frizzen face for the best sparking and even face ware" he told me to nibble the rear of the flint if to long,  ("you may have to notch the flints if to long, use plyers to nibble the back" )
