tool for belt hole punching

Not at all in the know about leather work so would like to know how you punch/make those holes in belts and straps. A cupped end punch or some other tool?

I dont use these particular punches but I know they will be fine for hobby use. I use oval and round punches like these but they are fairly expensive. These will work fine if you are not in a production scenario. I would stay far away from the revolving type punches.

I’ve used a hand drill with success for belt holes. Works just fine, but I’m not professional leatherist so maybe it’s not the best.

Thanks James, those look like what I need for the small amount of work I will have for them and I have a Harbor Freight store close by too.  :)

I use punches with a single shaft and replaceable punch tip, available from Tandy and Hobby Lobby and maybe Harbor Freight. I have a hard rubber matt  to back the leather so I don't wreck the punch.
The rotary punches James mentions are tempting, but I've had them fail too often. Once they loose alignment they are worthless.

Very true!  But until they fail, they work well for the occasional user.  I've had my rotary punch going on 25+ years and I believe it will last another 15+, maybe more at the rate I'm using it.  (It was not made you-know-where though...)

I have a set of those hollow punches that I've been using for many years and rely on them.  I also have one of those replaceable punch cutter sets but can't find them at Harbor Freight.  I've used all these on leather, cardboard and felt.

Tandy has punches that create a oval hole for the buckle tongue versus just a round hole. Makes for a nicer fit/look.
