Scrimshaw Work on Powder Horn....Finally
« on: April 18, 2020, 10:16:22 PM »
For quite some time, when I don't feel like working on more involved projects, I have been knocking out a few powder horns.  The work is relaxing and easy to stop and start.  I make most horns assuming I will engrave them at some point but the engraving / scrimshaw work takes much more thought, planning and concentration.  So I have been making horns and then putting them aside to wait for the spirit to move me to engrave.  But then I realized that I have quite a pile of horns waiting for engraving (these are only a few) and that I might not live long enough to get them all done.  So I started in on the only one of the group that is not mounted in sterling silver...

Translated from the Latin, the side with the crown reads, "Be Thou faithful unto death, and I will give Thee a crown of life" from the book of Revelation.  The opposite side reads, "I will go to the altar of God, to God the joy of my youth".  I did the scrimshaw work over the Easter weekend, so the words all seemed appropriate.  Now I need to come up with themes for all the other horns.....and get busy.

"No man will be a sailor who has contrivance enough to get himself into a jail; for being in a ship is being in a jail, with the chance of being drowned... a man in a jail has more room, better food, and commonly better company."
Dr. Samuel Johnson, 1780

You make masterpieces pretty commonplace, Dave!  Excellent work, again.

Thank you all for the kind comments.  Mark.....there are a lot of things I don't do well.....I'm just smart enough to not take pictures of them and then post them here .. ;)

Dave, that engraved horn fits with all of your other creations.....beautiful, meticulous, and detailed.  I love the engraving about Jesus.  Well thought out.

Without the engraving, the horn has a European flair to my eye.  The Latin simply seals the deal.  Well done indeed.

I especially love that bone or ivory finial on the plug, that has an acorn feel to it.  The divots/stippling around the base really captures the look.

Hah!  I couldn't agree more.  I've made 27 bags, and there are probably pieces of leather for 25 more that I ruined and threw away.   :-D   I guess that is the learning process.

God bless,   Marc

Dave, how about a map engraving for either the second or third from the top?
