Early John Newcomer schimmel ...
« on: April 23, 2020, 02:14:21 AM »
Starting with a Early Lancaster Co. Schimmel rifle that I built for someone who traded it back for another gun ..
Sorta pattered after a John Newcomer ....

I believe this gun has a Rice barrel, nicely swamped ..  45-3/8" long in a 58 caliber and a hand filed cone muzzle ..
A large Siler lock and a very crisp single trigger ...
All inlet into a stock of dense SugarMaple stock .. with brass mountings  ..

8 3/4 lbs. and a super balance ..  14-1/4" length of trigger pull with a 1/4" cast off ... very comfortable ..

This rifle is very much like new and was only shot very little .. I took it to the range a few months ago and at 50 yards it tore a ragged hole ..

Thanks for looking ...
Allen Martin

Outstanding! Another example of a fine rifle not needing frills. It’s like a beautiful lady not needing makeup.

Thanks for moving this over to the Contemporary discussion Al. Though not as slender and lean as your Lehigh Schimmels, she has the same sleek beauty. Looong barrel and LOP to match. Gorgeous.

What a heart-breaking beauty...….

Whoever had it should never have traded it in.  How do you upgrade from that?

I know that’s right. Al said it was a Mennonite buddy of his who found it a bit heavy. Al made him another so he would be 100% satisfied, though the guy loved the gun and didn’t want to trade it. I’d sell all my guns to own one from a builder like that. High class.

Lovely rifle Allen. Is that one of Reeves Goehring's trigger guard patterns or one of your own?

Thanks again Al. And I sure am glad I took a shine to her too. If it’d stop raining for one durn minute around here I’d get her out back and shoot something with it instead of aiming it out the window at my dog....

Hit the nail on the head with that one, Dave.  Such a beautifully styled and executed build. The pure symmetry of it. That one shines.
