It is a real shame that it will not be restored, at least anytime soon (decades?). That is the major problem with public/museum ownership in my opinion. They usually just let a good gun molder away, or trade (or sell) them out the back door. I know of many good guns that fall (or have fallen) into all those categories.
This is a great gun, too. A bit later perhaps than the first one shown, as it has the 1760s-70s round faced, engraved colonial lock mechanism. The gun looks to be totally original and in 'as found' condition. The muzzle looks good and does not seem to have been cut back as many were.
