Some time ago, I THINK somebody mentioned a barrel maker that was here in KY, who would make swamped rifle barrels, whatever you wanted. I'm in the mood for a straight rifled barrel, and wonder if this guy (if he even exists...mental notes aren't worth the paper they're printed on), or someone else could do one for me.

Anybody remember this fella, or am I just imagining things?

I was at a trade fair in Lawrenceburg in the spring and there were two barrel manufacturers from Ky. who had a booth there. Hope this helps!

Kenny, that's a lot more helpful than the smart aleck remarks I was gonna post.

Anybody heard of these guys, what's their specialty, etc? It's always good to know about another bbl maker.

I met Wayne Jenkins at a gun show in Elizabethtown a few years ago. Seemed like a pretty nice fellow and his prices at the time were comparable to other makers. He did offer both straight and swamped. As to quality I can't say as I have not used any of his but have heard he makes a good product. Outside finish on the ones he had for sale were straight off the shaper just like Colerain, Rayl etc. Last time I saw him He was hanging out at the Rice booth at the CLA show in Lexington.If You are going maybe that could be a source of information.

hey guys i happen to live 20 minets from each they both are pretty good makers w.j. sort of specializes in chunk guns c.b. in about any kind of barrel im stocking a .52 swamper from charlie at the moment got a .58 oct to round from wayne last week please forgive my typing keith vance

I talked to Wayne Jenkins at last years CLA show, seems like a nice fellow. He did have his own table there, but didn't
really look at or inspect his barrels, after all..............Don

Charlie Burton makes a good barrel. A few other have his barrels at Friendship. The ones who have built a rifle from them say they every bit as good as any of the othersHe made a false muzzle barrel for me, 52 cal. I have yet to put it to the test. (build) From all out ward appearences it seems to a good one. He uses 12L14 steel I believe.

Close Mr. Getz I had table at CLA not Wayne, he hasn't set up there for a 2 or 3 years. Is a good friend and excellent barrelmaker. In fact it is his fault I'm building barrels.

I guess I'm the new kid on the block. Been at it for 2 years (plus some set-up and learning time)
I build to order, custom only and can do most anything. Use 12L14 and am currently running 3 to 4 month lead time. Will be set up at CLA don't know where but will be there somewhere.

A little over a year ago Brad Emig at Cabin Creek had some straight rifled swamped barrels. Can't remember who he got them from but you could ask him. I considered a swamped straight rifled barrel instead of a swamped smoothie for the Bucks Co. smooth rifle I'm getting ready to build.

I want a swamped octagon barrel, .54, straight rifled. I can draw out desired dimensions. Something similar to the "standard" Getz/Colerain/Rice 42" swamped barrel, but with a larger, more flared breech.

I've had a hankerin' for a straight rifled barrel for some time now.

What would be the advantage of straight rifling? If is is for shot it looks like a smooth bore would do better. Just curious.

Theoretically, it shoots shot better (you can now get modern shotgun barrels that are straight rifled), and shoots patched ball better than smoothbore.

It's just neat and different (though rather common in the 18th century).

Left hand twist may-be, never actually thought about it. 8 groove NO I am set up for 7 groove. why left hand ?

For those of you that have never thought about how a rifle twists when fired think of this. If you are a right handed shooter the rifle will twist away from your face when fired if it has left hand rifling.I have always made my own barrels and use left hand rifling because I really dislike getting punched by the cheek piece when the rifle recoils.
I have read comments about how left hand twist dosen't shoot as well in the northern 1/2 of the globe but I think that is a lot of B.S. by writers trying to make themselves look smart.

Do you realize what is going to happen here.....you are going to swamp him with orders and he'll be just like all of the
other barrels makers......have a waiting list. Pete, that might hold true if you are shooting a big bore with a heavy load
but, as you well know, most muzzleloaders are not really that potent. Maybe you could get Dick Miller to do a barrel for
you. He has a rifling guide with will give a right hand twist for the first half of the barrel, then switch to a left hand twist
for the second half. This was designed for those people who live down near the equator............Don
