My RCA #43
« on: May 04, 2020, 07:43:56 AM »
Well, my #43 is all done, except for a few things that are not done!
I started this rifle at WKU in Jack Brook's class, too long ago to mention.  It's my first rifle from a blank, built a few kits in between starting this one and now.
Ed Rayl .54 Cal barrel, a copy of the Oerter Griffin Rifle Barrel.
RE Davis Colonial lock.  Shape modified by me, bolster narrowed, and moulding on lock plate by me.
Track of the Wolf buttplate and trigger guard.
Patch box from MBS or The Rifle Shoppe, can't remember
RR thimbles, muzzle cap, trigger, trigger plate, Side plate and front/rear sight made by me.
TOTW Ye Olde Aqua Fortis, Permalyn Sealer (4 coats), then Permalyn Finish.

Still need to file a few wood screws flush, and tidy up the bottom of the patch box cavity, and probably a hundred other things!

Critiques and comments welcome,

Cheers,
Norm

Norm, glad you got it finished, and I have to say it was worth the wait to see it!  You did a wonderful job carving the rifle, and I like the fact you honored the patchbox that is on the original rifle as it is a true part of the rifle's history - whether is was original or added later.  What finish are you planning for the barrel?  Oh, nice job on the wood finish also!

Curtis,
I plan to leave the barrel in the white.  I don't have a good guess as to what the original had, but there are certainly Oerter guns with barrels in the white in Bob's book.  I'll probably engrave my name on it, but need to brush up first.  Haven't engraved in 6 months or more.

Thanks for the comment on the finish, honestly it looks better in the pictures than in real life.  A healthy dose of Rennaissance wax helped smooth out the error I made in the last coat.

cheers,
Norm

Nicely done early gun. Really clean. That's a great box too.

Very nice over all. You did a fine job on the nose cap and thimbles. Your carving is well executed. The finish is quite pleasing.  I really like the job you did on the patch box. Except for the but plate your inletting is very good.  That being said I very much like the rifle.

Nice job, looks great and will look even better after some natural patina and handling marks appear.

Norm,
Nicely done.  Nothing distracting on your rifle, just clean crisp lines.  Looks like a rifle should look.

Wow! First rifle from a blank, mine is buried in the backyard! If you listen closely you can faintly hear TAPS being played in the background.

Congratulations!

Old Traveler,
No, the fireplace is not my handiwork.  The folks from whom we bought the house did much of the trim work etc.  They hand picked those rocks specifically from a river up in Montana, hauled them down here and put them up themselves.
Lots of little touches like that in the house.  We got lucky when we bought it.

Cheers,
Norm

Norm, I've been fortunate to spend time with the original, and your version of this rifle gives us a look at old no 43 was she was new off the bench.  Congrats on the overall rifle, and the many details that make it special.  The old rifle left the shop with barrel and lock in the white, and they now have that speckled patina shown in the photos.  Your rifle brings a smile, thanks.  Bob
Curtis stocked a fine version of this rifle a while back, and showed us the process, thanks.
