« on: May 08, 2020, 08:02:11 PM »
;D OK for some of you (Richard P. thank you) know I've been trying to make my own flints (no good flint I can find in Pa) so I broke down and order some from Kentucky Flint works (A great helpful guy)  and with Richards input wacked out something that might work(and 3 cuts 2 blood blisters)

My biggest problem is how to thin out the fat flakes without shattering the flint(lots and lots of mistakes small shards)

Those appear the same colour as Rich's river rocks (except for the black one).  Tough material.

you could come to a knap in like bald eagle, hosted by bald eagle st park. check susquehanna flintknappers facebook page for info. you can get a lot of tips, and also buy stone there. Craig Ratzat would be a stone dealer that handles english flint.

You’re off to a good start for sure. Thinning a finished flint is not achievable without losing some length. Best to thin first then shorten to length. I can show you sometime on FaceTime.

If you're interested and don't know about it yet, there are a couple of great videos from the 1940s or so ("movies") about the Brandon, England, gunflint knappers on YouTube.

I've got that same bluish-gray "flint" along one of the banks at a local creek, a big shelf of it. I've busted off several good chunks of it and tried to knap gun flints from it... And failed miserably. However I did get some very nice shards to use with my striker for firestarting.
