Captured Patchboxes question
« on: May 09, 2020, 03:09:22 PM »
I’m looking forward to a future project of a southern rifle that I recently saw in an old muzzle blast mag that had a captured Patchboxes lid.  My question is how the lid sits in this situation, does the lid sit “on” the surrounding brass when in closed position or does the lid rest inside the Patchboxes cutout?  The pics I can see makes it looks like the lid sits on the surrounding brass.  The rifle in question interests me with this Patchbox,it’s release being on the left side of stock and later style lock.  I haven’t studied southern rifles much till lately, just ordered some KRA disc’s.  This rifle I’m interested was made by Hiram Kennedy & Company and Shumway had shown it in an article Nov. 2000 MuzzleBlasts.  Hopefully someone has some insight into this style of patchbox.

My Thomas Simpson has beveled edges on the box opening and on the lid door. I posted pictures of this box in the antique forum a while back. If you do a search for post by Bama and Thomas Simpson patch box it should come up.

I just did the search and the pictures are no longer there. Must have been the Photobucket debacle. I will try to repost some pictures later today.

Many years ago built this early Virginia  LR and used all steel hardware.....including the captured lid Pbox. Not as nice as Dave's and doesn't have a hidden hinge. Saw a pic of a Pbox  on  an original Virginia that had this  same general shape but made a couple of changes.

The lid does fit into the cutout  but has a cold formed end to close the lid's fairly high   dome which becomes nearly straight near the  hinge.  The lid latch details are long forgotten.

Enjoyed building this LR.....has an oct/rd bbl in .54 cal. and a Davis Twigg lock. The Bplate is 2-1/8" wide.....Fred

The rifle I’m looking at has an exposed hinge and a domed lid.  A domed lid paired with a later style lock and the lack of wood carving intrigues me for some reason.
