In the past I have put patches, rawhide, Pewter, tin, Brass, Copper on horns for show. In the last month or so I have managed to file through the sides of Two horns.
This one is taken from page 341 of Dr. Hopkins book
Bone Tipped & Banded Horns, it is identified as a Southwestern Virginia horn. It is about 15 1/2" around the outside curve and 12 1/2 tip-to-tip. The Maple butt is about 2 1/2", held in by Four steel pins. The Two part tip is horn, the collar is held by Two pins and the tip by Eight. The repair is rawhide and is stitched with rawhide.
From the question about rounding the body of a horn; If you look close you will see that the butt is round but the center of the horn is almost oval.
