.58/24 smoothbore loads
« on: May 16, 2020, 01:48:19 AM »
I’m in the process of getting a Northstar trade gun in .58. I’ve never messed with this caliber before. I would like to know what kind of loads are being shot in this caliber. Both patch/ball,shot and powder charges.

One of caywoods I had years ago liked 65 grains of 3 ffff patched ball shot like a rifle at 25 yds.  One ragged hole of a bench.

For target, I shoot 55gr 2F, felt wad, 15th patch with .570 ball.  I use 70gr for hunting.

For shot, I use 70gr 2F, wasp nest, 80gr shot, and wasp nest on top.

Is that load tight loading. I ordered some .562 balls. I have .10 and .22 patching. Thought I would start there and see how it works.

Nope.  Not bad at all.  I get better accuracy than using a 10th  patch.  Best thing is just try different combinations.

Since you’re experiencing, try your .562 ball dropped right down on top of 85 Or 90 grains of 2F and held in place with a piece of lightly greased wool blanket, or some hornets nest. You might be shocked how well this shoots.
