First Build Finally Completed!
« on: May 09, 2020, 11:48:31 PM »
After a long but enjoyable build, I am posting pictures of my completed Chambers York County .45 cal rifle.  It has a swamped, 42 inch barrel, double set Davis Trigger as well as all the rest of the parts and dimensions of a Chambers York Kit.  I am happy about the way it turned out, even with a number of rookie mistakes.  Its pretty hard to compete with the pros on this forum!  I would like to thank those same pros for their unfailing support and as I look over my seven pages of names I contacted by PM (some more than once), they are the single most important reason for my gun being completed.  Living in a part of this country virtually devoid of any expert, hands on help, I relied on you members of this Forum, the great tutorials, Jim and Barbie Chambers, books, DVD's and so on.  thank you all so much! Now it is time to get out and sight in that rifle, do some target practice so I can participate at the Mid-West Rendezvous (if any will still be available this summer!) and finally get ready for deer hunting season this fall.

Bill, every one makes mistakes but there is a whole lot to like in your first effort. I like your gun. You have the right to grin a little when you show it off. :)

What did you use to finish the barrel and lock?

In response to Deuce50's question about what I used as a finish on the barrel and lock, it was Kibler's Patina Solution.  I carded it back to the level that I liked.  I don't know how well it will hold up or whether it will give too much glare from the sun when shooting.  If it does, I might put on another layer(s) or go back to rust browning, which "got away" on me the first time I tried it and resulted in an unacceptable "pebbly finish".

I have been carving for quite a few years so when I found out about how I could incorporate my carving abilities--especially after watching Kibler's tutorials on plunge cutting with different gouge radii, and after Acer's help in obtaining and much practice with Lindsay gravers and sharpeners it was just plain fun! (I included a picture of an "in the white" stage of my stock carving--funny how different they come out after you stain and finish.  Also, notice the practice blocks with brass plates screwed on for engraving practice)

Had to laugh when I saw Daryl's response - the first reply.  He and I had the same reaction - WOW!  That is really a superlative firearm in every sense.
