Birds Eye Stocked Rifle I Just Finished
«

Here is a smaller Beck type rifle I finished up today. The components came from Pecatonica and started out from their Beck Boys kit. It is 36 caliber and has a 36" Rice 3/4" octagon barrel that Pecatonica turned down the front portion. Small Siler lock and mostly their brass components and a few of mine. The wood is very dense and was a joy to work.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Thanks guys. Mike, this was my first also. I really liked working it. Very dense and it cut somewhat nice as long as the tools were sharp. I only had a few eyes pop out and I believe those happened when I was doing the initial sanding. I may do another, but the price is kinda prohibitive for making a habit of using it.

Quite dramatic, that one, as it takes your breath away. I like it more than any birds eye stock I have ever seen before. Thanks for posting!

No stain on this one. Aquafortis followed by oil, Permalyn and finally Chambers finish. I hope it holds up.

That is really stunning wood. You did well not to carve it or stick a patch box on it. The wood would overpower any embellishments.
Nice job.

A most unusual gunstock! Birdseye with a bit of curl - gorgeous for sure. And you have done a super job on the rifle.

WOW that one is OUTRAGIOUS! Most eyes I've ever seen in one from muzzle cap, er, plate, to butt! I'm glad you didn't hide the wood with patchbox and inlays. AF was a good choice on this to make the eyes go crazy!

The more I look at it, the more I'm fascinated by it - It looks like raindrop Damascus.
Thank you for sharing,
