R. E. Davis Contract Lock
« on: May 14, 2020, 01:54:25 PM »

Anyone have any experience with this lock from RE Davis.  I’m considering it for a SMR build with a 32cal Issac Hayes A weight swamped barrel from Rice.

I used it recently for a Deringer rifle build but I went with the gooseneck cock option. On mine the sear arm was not low on the plate as is normal. It was up about 3/16, maybe 1/4”.  I made a new sear then had to make a new sear spring. It’s a very snappy lock now. If the high sear arm does not bother you (if that will not be a problem with your trigger) It should be fine.

My main concern would be the size of that lock.  It’s a big lock. If you’re using an A profile barrel that lock may torque the gun a little too much. Have you considered that new Rice Henry Nock lock or perhaps a Chambers late Ketland?

I have Chambers classic Ketland on a rifle and really like it. I’m looking for something with a flat faced lock plate. I could use the Chambers gunmakers lock and round the bottom of the pan and back of the frizzen to reduce the Germanic look of it. I’ll probably order in the next week or so and am exploring options.

I used this lock on a copy of an early VA iron mounted rifle. The only thing I will say about it is never again!
